Inexpensive Com Unit
My wife and I are now taking longer rides on our Spyder. I'm looking for a good inexpensive setup so we can discuss the sites we see without turning heads and yelling. If I want to be yelled at I'll wait till I get home
Thank you in advance for any recommendation.

Sena Bluetooth
I recommend that you shy away from inexpensive intercoms. What you pay for is indeed what you will get when you are talking helmet intercoms. Sound quality and ease of use are two important things that are worth paying a bit extra for. Trust me, I have been down the road with inexpensive intercom mono sound units and you really don't want to go there.
I prefer the wireless stereo headset units, only because there are no dangling wires to contend with. The Sena wireless units work very well with good stereo sound quality as well as ease of use. It is very important to be able to jog the intercom on and off with the push of a readily accessible button that can be operated easily with gloves. We have the SMH10 units and all of the functionality that we were looking for is packed into these units. The Sena SMH5 headsets go for about $220.00 for the dual pack and add another $80.00 for the SMH10 dual pack.
Besides the great intercom functionality of these bluetooth units, you will also be able to pair the headsets to any other Bluetooth enabled device (cell phone, GPS, MP3 player etc...) Note: there are other brand name quality units out there as well, both wireless and wired.
I suggest that you visit www.webbikeworld.com and browse through their reviews of the different brands of helmet intercoms. Great resource to help assist you in choosing the right helmet intercom for your specific needs.
Again, I urge you to stay away from the lower end intercoms systems. Their price point is where it is for a reason.

In my opinion, cheap comm units are only worth what you pay for them. Go with a proven system that has good reviews...Scala Cardo G4 or the new G9, or the Sena SMH10.

The G4 is a beauty for sure. For use as just an intercom; wouldn't it be a bit of overkill? The one that we got for this type of usage has nowhere near the RANGE of the G4, but unless you're talking bike to bike; do you need it?

Nancy may have better experience with the G9 than I am having - even calling Cardo has been a chore this week. On hold for LONG times and end up hanging up. Furthering my sinking feeling on regret sorry to say.
Every likes the G4's that are using them though so apparently a more proven technology.

Agree with Scottu here.

We have the J&M wired set already, but haven't installed them. Doesn't seem the set we have will fit my wife's Nolan N43 helmet, so we need to get her a different set. I've read the J&M sound pretty good, but if I have to replace her set, I will be pretty close to an smh10, which would include two sets.
Is there a way to connect the sena to the Spyder's existing system/radio via some type of blue tooth adapter?

I love our SENA SHM10, it is great to be able to communicate with my passenger or other riders around me. The bluetooth capabilities are great as well works with our phones, and with our ipods.
Since Jake and I are going to Spyders in the Adirondacks in August but Jake is driving the bike, and I'm driving our car ( ) with the fur-kids and supplies for a week stay. We shave and up an extra helmet set up for the Sena so I can talk to him from the car using the Sena instead of having to use cell phones. I will just use an ear bud in my ear, and have the velcro microphone connected to my collar. This way we can just voice activation to connect and talk if one of us wants to point something out, needs a break, or the pups need a potty break. I thought I'd look a little silly driving our RSX with my full face motorcycle helmet on ..lol

Uclear 100 Intercom
Has anyone used the "Uclear" unit. It has no boom mic to deal with-I love the idea, and has been well rated by most publications. Since there is no VOX function, I am curious if the GPS gives instructions and the intercom mutes, do I have to re-initiate the conversation or will the intercom still be on after the instruction is given?

We have the new Scala G9's. They work very well. We've both used them without face shields and do not get very much wind noise. Have not tried the multi-rider link as we haven't ridden with others yet. But, the telephone and GPS works well. We both have individually linked to our phones and I have linked to the GPS as well. My next experiment will be to link to my bluetooth enabled ham radio rig as soon as I get it installed.

I'looking seriously at Sena too. However J&M has a complete line of components that probably includes what you need for the Nolan. If you can tolerate a wired system.

Here's what you'll need:

There's also a version for ear buds, if you choose to go that route

The scala G4 gets pretty good rstings. We were going to go that route, but they have no apple software support, just windows. Not a problem for us, but some in the group only have macs, so we all went with Sena instead.
The windows/mac support would only be a factor, if you need to update the headsets. At some point, you would need to, to connect with newer devices or apply new bugs.... Errrrr, I mean bug fixes.

Just out of curiosity, do you guys still use ear plugs with the headsets?

I suppose my opinion is a nonsequiter
Many have said to stay away from the cheap intercoms. I wholly agree.
That being said, I'm pretty happy with the BRP OEM setup, It (now) integrates all functions well.
It is wired, so the rider/passenger have to jack in, but frankly, I'd prefer that to charging up the bluetooth units wherever I go.
I have the J&M headsets, so when leaving the bike for a short time, I find it very convenient to separate the lower cord from the upper section and walk away from the bike for whatever........
But of all the systems available, this is probably the MOST expensive one.
And yes, I use earplugs with the headsets. Strangely, I find the sound through the headset seems better using earplugs. It tends to drown out the external noise, allowing the sounds from the headset to seem more distinct. I DO, however, need a higher volume setting.

Unclear intercom
Has anyone tried this unit. I love the idea of no boom mic, or for that matter any regular mic.
It has no VOX and I wondered if you were on the intercom and a GPS instruction came on, whether it would go back to intercom or if I had to restart the intercom function since there is no VOX
The units have gotten great press and a new model is due out soon. They are expensive but supposedly have the best noise reduction of any unit on the market (various motorcycle magazine reviews).

Do you mean the UCLEAR intercom? I love mine, it is super easy and durable and the sound quality is great. I got mine here...http://uclearstore.com/

Ended up going with the Sena system and have no regrets. I wasn't going to use the CB and the boss rarely likes my music, so with the Sena, she can pick her own tunes and we can still talk and not have to fiddle with wires either. It seems to work iut pretty well.
