    Default Heading downrange, need long term storage advice

    I'm headed to someplace hot and sandy for a year. Anyone have long term storage advice for the Spyder? I'm not opposed to just throwing away the battery and buying a new one when I get back, rather than leaving it on a tender for that long.

    I would follow the instructions for winterizing your spyder, and you could pull the battery put a tender on it and put the tender on a timer after a full charge is completed, I think that 10 to 15 min a day would keep it happy. Make sure you go through the full spring time prep when you get back. Good luck and thanks for your service, unless you are talking about Barbados or something like that, in that case have fun.

    I have a great idea, just leave it at my house and I will make sure the battery does not go down...

    I agree that you should follow the winterizing procedures. Full tank of fresh fuel with a fuel stabilizer. Invest in a good quality battery tender. Get a multi-stage type (mine are Yuasa, which Motorcycle Consumer News gave a top rating some years back). This will charge and maintain the battery at peak condition. It is "smart" and automatically cycles on & off.

    Thanks for your service, Joe. It will once again be very personal having someone we know serving in the sandbox.

    Note that the Spyder manual does not talk about winterization, but rather "long-term storage". I personally recommend doing the whole fogging oil routine, as specified. I use that type of procedure for my vintage bikes. As to the battery, you could very well replace it when you get back, but I would remove it anyway, as BRP recommends.

    First , From one who spent some time in hell 66/67, Be safe and thanks.
    Back to the Spyder, Unless you have someone who can watch the tender, pull the battery and put it aside and when you get back get a new one, Also drain the gas tank, even with a stabilizer after a year any gas setting that long will collect water and turn to varnish and plug the injectors.

    Just an idea but a dealer might take care of it for a service member making a year long trek to yonder desert. I know I would be a patron of a service center that takes care of the troops. Step up guys, what do you say?

    Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at the manual, too, and see what they say about storage.

    Well since Striperking has generously volunteered his time and efforts to keep your Spyder from getting stale, I'd like to suggest a group effort to take some of this load from his shoulders...
    We'll just have a "Spyder-Relay"... Ride it from one Spyderlover to the next and keep passing it on! Let us know when you need it back at your house and we'll co-ordinate the ryde so that it gets home when you do...

    Default A Service for those who Serve

    I go along with a previous entry. Look around for a Dealer who might like publicity and suggest a military discount to store the spyder. You may also seek assistance from a local American Legion or VFW post. Maybe someone there could give you a tip on where to store the spyder and many have riding groups of their own. Who knows maybe one of the members owns and shop and will store the Spyder.

    Another thought,
    Make sure the Spyder is kept insured, for at least fire and theft, Any thing can happen to a bike sitting somewhere for a year.
