shell oil
Hello John,
I was able to find an operators manual on-line for a 2011 RT. The
oil specified is:
XPS SYNTHETIC BLEND OIL (SUMMER GRADE)
(P/N 293 600 121) or a 5W 40 semi-synthetic (minimum)
or synthetic motorcycle oil meeting the requirements for
API service SL, SJ, SH or SG classification
Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic oil will meet these requirements and is
safe for wet-clutches.
Regards,
Keith

ROTELLA T-6
John, I see you received some info from " Keith " @ Shell .......I used the T-6 in my 1330 engine and was Happy with it .........BUT the 1330 has a different "wet clutch " than the 998 engine.......The " T-6 " oil is ...SM .... not SL...If you want a fantastic Oil at a fantastic price get some Valvoline 4T/stroke Mtc oil Full Synthetic 10w/40 I have paid as little $ 6.00 per qt. ( on-line-order ) @ Walmart.....This oil has the second lowest amount of molybdenum in it ( only Amsoil has less ) and it is JASO MA-2...........................Mike

I would not use Rotella in the 998. You'll slip your clutch. Great oil, just not a good match for the 998.

Hey Ron,
I got a hand me down case of amsoil 10/40 motorcycle, not sure if I'm going to use it. Ever hear of any 998 clutch concerns?
Thanks!

Rotella T6 5w40 is motorcycle rated and a wet clutch slip rating of JASO MA.
Rotella T6 0w40 is not motorcycle rated and does not have wet clutch slip rating of any kind.
Picked up on that in the auto parts store the other day.

Rotella
We went with AMSOIL so there is no controversy.

SM still no good for 998.
Point I was making is that Rotella T6 0W40 is not good for motorcycle use at all. You can't say Rotella T6 is ok to use in the 1330 engine. It has to specific to which viscosity you may be talking about.

Never actually seen Rotella T6 in anything but the 5W40. Is the 0W also in a blue bottle? Need to know what to watch out for to avoid buying the wrong stuff. Although I usually get it from Amazon these days for a little under $18 a gallon.

The Amsoil you have is proven problem free no matter which Spyder motor you use it in. I would definitely use it. But be careful. You might not be satisfied with anything else afterwards!

The ones on the shelf I saw where both in the same blue 5L bottle. Look the same on the front label except for the viscosity. The back label on the 0W did not have the motorcycle icon on the back like the 5W. It had the API rating of SN. The diesel spec as well and that's it. Thinking about it more maybe it's not available in the US yet.

Ron, your not the first to mention there is a difference between the clutches on the twins and triples, can you tell me whats different.

I've been using Rotella T6 with good luck. No issues at all, but I have the SM5.....maybe that makes a difference. I've used the stuff in other bikes as well and have never had an issue.

The centrifugal clutch on the SE5 vs the wet disk clutch in the SE6

What is that suppose to mean. SE5, SM5, SE6 and SM6 are all wet disk clutches.

Of course there is a difference in how the clutch plates engage between the SE and the SM. But beyond that I don't have any particular information. It is possible that the less sensitive 1330 (SM6 and SE6) clutch plates are of a different compound less prone to slippage. But I would think that if this were the case BRP would simply change the temperamental 998 clutches to this same compound. But who knows.
The more likely possibility, in my mind, would be more friction surface area, higher lock-up clutch pressure, or both. You'd have to ask someone more intimate with the clutch system for a better answer.
The main thing is to know that the 998 won't necessarily work with the same oils that the 1330 is happy with. And to avoid problematic oils with the 998.

Good choice. We ran that in our 998s as well and it held up very well.

Sorry but I forgot where I read this ..........but the only Full Synthetic Oil for Motorcycles that has less " Molybdenum " ( which is BAD for wet clutches like ours ) is Amsoil

The SM5 is a bit more forgiving than the SE5. But many have had clutch slippage issues with this oil. With so many other great choices available, I always recommend not using Rotella in the 998. A new clutch will cost you more than a whole lot of oil changes.
