    Default New MC Law

New MC law takes effect today......via a friend.

One of the new Virginia laws passed takes effect today. Traffic lights and two-wheelers: The new law allows people on motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles to proceed through red lights at intersections after coming to a complete stop and waiting 120 seconds or two cycles of the traffic light, whichever is shorter. It is designed to help those who get stranded at a red light because only cars and trucks are heavy enough to trip the sensor that changes the light. (story can be verified at

Some more info also from a friend.......

While on the subject of traffic laws and motorcycles. It is now a reckless driving citation in Virginia to ride two abreast. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-857. This is now a crime punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-868. This the same criminal classification as assault and DUII. BTW in all but one other state this is a normal and legal form of riding. I would argue that for experienced riders it is also safer than the recommended single file or staggered methods prescribed in Virginia.
Nicole and I were stopped for this last week as well as riding headphones in, which is another violation in Virginia. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1078. Apparently if you put one ear bud in one ear you are still okay.

    Cool What about 3-wheelers?

Are you saying this law does not apply to 3-wheelers? If the signal is not triggered, I would think any vehicle could proceed with caution. You can't sit there all day waiting for it to change say for a left turn.

Truckers use to call it the communist state because of traffic laws and all the weigh stations. At least they finally raised the speed limit on I95.
