About to Buy
2010 RS SE5. I thought we had deal at $14K + TTL. Dealer added freight & set up equalling about 1200 ($700 for freight & 500 for setup). I was a little ticked b/c that was not my understanding of deal. Not crazy about paying for setup. Still will consider but setup needs to go. Dealer shows wholesale price list. And states he is selling me below invoice & states that he is not charging for freight and setup. I say if so, why is the extra 1200 there for freight & setup. The total number is below the invoice price he showed but it makes no sense that the 1200 is there. My offer was 14K & TTL. I am willing to go up a little but not much. I suspect that bike has been there for awhile & I am not about to pay more than I think it is worth. Especially for a 2010. Your thoughts? I can walk away from this easily.

How excited were you about the deal in front of the salesman? Hard to run a poker face when you're getting something like a Spyder.
Not having been there take my advise with a grain of salt.
If the Spyder has been there awhile, and if you can truely walk away. My suggestion would be that you tell the dealer you'll think about it. That the deal seems to have changed from what you initally understood it to be.
This time of year is pretty slow for dealers anywhere but Florida and southern California. He may just be playing his cards to see where you'll fold.
Then don't call them back for a few days. They may call you.
On the other hand, sounds like a fair deal for an SE5. It's not about the charges. You have to look at the bottom line. If the price is fair it really doesn't matter how you got there.

Is it new or used? $14k for a 2010 se5 is a pretty good deal. Look at the ads, people are still selling 2008s with miles on em for 10-14k. My dealer has a 2009 se5 on the floor with 0 miles for 14,999 +TTL and freight and setup. The thing I have noticed with the spyder is that there are still few enough of them that the price remains high. The retail value on my 08 sm5 is still 12k according to NADA guides. Maybe try to get em to throw in an extended warrenty or something, but it sounds like your already getting a good deal.

Don't walk....run! Tell him you will only do the deal as you understood it to be. I paid $12.3K for an '09 SM5. Add $1500-2000 for SE5 and '10 still = $14-14.5. IMHO

My dealer waived the delivery charge (usually 300-500.00)...I didn't argue the setup fee as the bike has to be partially assembled...you should be able to get that 1200.00 down a little...be reasonable and see what the dealer will do...you have a reasonable position with the extra 1200 tacked on...
Forget the invoice price...there are other dealer incentives to sell the bike...

Basically what he was saying is that the original price of the spyder was 15,200 + TTL. What he did for you is dropped the sale price of the spyder down to $14k + TTL, taking $1,200 off to compensate for the freight and setup fees. So the freight and setup fees are still there, he just compensated by lowering the price of the spyder. So you are still paying those fees, but less on the spyder to make up for it.

I didn't finance, but that seems like a good rate to me

shook hands on mine today
Just shook hands on mine today. Too cold to take. With 5 yr extended (really only 3 as it comes with 2 already) warranty, and my Honda Rebel as trade-in, 15,000. Of course I'm on LI, NY so always more expensive. Can't wait. All white. Learning from you all, already! Thanks

You're exactly right, there are many incentives for a dealer to sell. The problem is, you're never going to know where the dealer really is on the incentive scale as there are many factors involved.
The buyer's position is usually much less involved. But you still don't have to show all your cards.
You can be reasonable and still get a better deal, usually. Dealers will never start at the bottom line. One of the ploys is to lead the buyer to think they are getting price A, building a mental relationship between the buyer and the product. Then you lay price B on them with the difference being more than you think you can get.
If the buyer goes for it you're sitting pretty, but it also gives the dealer room to deal, making the buyer think they worked a great price and still make money.

It never hurts to ask. Just remember that you are already getting a hell of a deal. Shop around you will see that is a great deal.

Yes, $12.3K was total before taxes and registration.

Oh, I forgot.....0% with no payments for 7 months! The finance deal comes from BRP.

Is that the BRP deal where no payments until June? If so, in the fine print, it says the APR is 13.95% after that period.

A friend of mine wanted to buy a Harley Super Glide and the dealer here in Memphis started at $15,000. My friend knew that was way too high so he started asking around other dealers such as MS, Little Rock and even Texas. Sure, the dealer in Memphis started lowering the price to what my friend wanted, so when my friend almost shook hands on the deal, the dealer added fees such as 0.007% document fees, 2 other additional state taxes that we never heard of, all of these almost went to $1000 over the "final price".
We went to a dealer up north in which other Harley owners recommended due to their "bottom price, you pay for it out the door" policy and sure enough, they went $1000 below the lowest offer with TT&R, and choose his HD jacket and helmet included in the deal ($900 worth). Worth the trip.
My Spyder dealer did the same thing. He gave me his lowest number, all fees included, and worked from there. I left a happy man and made a new friend.
So the moral of the story is "It never hurts to shop around and haggling with dealers, it's all about making the customer happy at the lowest the dealer can go"

My paperwork shows I paid $175 for freight and $80 for dealer prep; so maybe you can talk them down some. However, 14K is a good deal to start with on the RS SE5, at least around here in DFW. A local dealer is charging 13.5 for 2009 SM5's and my '10 RS-S was 16.5 with the 25" windshield thrown in.

Yes it is. You are correct, but I didn't care because it's free until then and I will pay off in June.
