Default Touch up paint for RT

I still can not get any touch up paint to repair a scratch and some small nicks. Is there a reason BRP does not offer any> I tried several sources including having the dealer try to get some-he can not either.

I even tried buying a few colors from a local Auto parts store and mixed them together, The color is not too far off but not right either.

A body shop can repair the small scratch but for $250 it is not worth it.

Let me know if anyone has found a source for paint- My 2010 is orbital blue

if you find a combo of touchup colors that work close enough let us know...

if I had a bad scratch would probably go to a place called chips away that has a process for filling in chips and scratches. they would match color but not cheap but would be pretty close... their corp office is here in Pittsburgh. they franchise their process...

but for minor touch-ups will wait for someone to find something close and cheap

    Default Not for the RT

Color rite does show colors for the the RS, none for the RT. When you search, the 2010 RT comes up, but they only show three colors, yellow, red, and a shade of silver. My RT is Orbital blue, and they show nothing available for RT as near as I can tell.

Perhaps that will change, but given the limited numbers sold-relatively, it may not.

It still makes no sense that BRP does not sell touch up paint, unless they believe their products are scratch proof.

    Wink

Thank you for that SC DOC

I spoke to a few folks locally and they told me that the paint code on our 2010 Ford F-150 was the same as it is for our RT-S... I plan on trying the touch-up paint for the Ford and see how close it is...

    Default Thanks for the reply

I checked to see the paint codes for the Fords and they do not seem to have the same paint code. They may have an equivalent however. At least it gets me off in the right direction.

I am with you on that. I used to paint for fun and realize there are hundred of thousands of colors and it take a real expert to match any colors up. By no means am I suggestion the solution has been found. But for me I am willing to buy the little spot repair tube and try it in places no one will notice...

That said I kind of argued with the paint specialist (He wanted to sell me a kit for all dark blue base coats and I did not feel this was the correct path). To the point of him getting some books out and color swatches to prove a point. Something about most car manufacturers actually only using a small % of colors available, but change the clearcoat or add additional additives to make the basecoat look different.

The fella I spoke to told me some number... Like RC74 or R62 or something like that (Can't remember sorry) and also said it is a standard blue. For example... If I drive to a Camper Shell place they look for this particular code on my door jam to know what shade of blue to take down from their displays and place on the truck . Something about Ford, Chevy and so on, may change the name of the dark blue but unless they add a special pearl or metalic type additive to it, they are the same dark blues. He pulled out a 1979 Chevy wagon Midnight metallic Blue and my 2010 Dark Blue Pearl Clearcoat and they looked the same to my silly eyes... lol

No idea if this person was just being nice to me or making a joke of me . But it seemed logical.

    Default Paint

I went to a small paint supply house business with a piece from my yellow Spyder to have it matched. They did a very good job and the paint will be used to cover small scratches using a tooth pick as a brush. You have to remember that if you are going to do any real painting on your Spyder you need more than the base color. After paint is applied that surface has to be covered 2 or 3 time with a transparent lacquer. A 1/4 liter of well matched yellow enamel paint cost me $7.00. That'll cover lots of little scratches.

    Default paint

just repaired our friends lower cover that blew off, it is a blue RTS, after having no luck with matching the codes , we had the color shot with a color gun at our local paint dealer it came up repeatedly with the same blendable match, I sealed it apllied the base and clear and it appears to be a very good match. I sealed the original paint because our local dealer told me he felt this paint is the new BASF water based paints, he felt thats why he could not direct match I had no chemical issues and match and finish good, I am sure this can be done by any local paint dealer.

    Default What type of paint

You mentioned "the new waterbased BASF" I do not know much about paints (or my RT for that matter!), but wouldn't you need some sort of acrylic non water based paint?

Full Moon was the silver on the GS. Don't know about the RT, though.

    Default paint

Yes used Dupont acryllic enamel, I am an amateur at best , but I have seen the dissatrous results of dissimilar chemicals which can basically turn your base coat into paint stripper, I sealed the panel with a heavy solids primer/sealer and had no issues, color match looks very good.
