Default Look on your Spyder See If The AAPTS Sensor Is In The Right Place.

In a recent post on Can Am Talk.com ," Beemerboy" says - "Do you smell a lot of gas fumes? poor gas mileage? Dash air temp gauge read a lot higher than it is outside, and climbs real high in traffic? rough running in traffic? I sure did and fouled two spark plugs in 1200 miles. A 1 minute inspection needs to be done. Go to your bike right now, stand in front of, and looking at the hood, look into the front small air intake hole on left side, do you see a 10MM headed bolt holding a sensor or just a open slot? If not, your dealer did not unwrap the AAPTS (ambient air pressure and temp sensor) from around the frame and laying right on your coolant over flow bottle. This needed to be done when the trunk was installed at the dealer. He fixed his and now says "My bike went from 30mpg to over 40 , temp gauge seems accurate compared to bank sign temp, no more gas smell! Really smoothed out every thing, Easy low rpm control. SMOOTH SMOOTH SMOOTH"
    In a post on Spydertalk.com,
(http://www.spydertalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8302) Tharkun#409 has pointed out that a few owners have learned that the AAPTS (ambient air pressure and temp sensor) was not installed during the PDI (product delivery)
When I (Martin) fitted my Evoluzione swaybar I discovered that mine also was never installed! It makes sense as my ambient air temperature reading was always miles too high. You can see it here cable tied to my frame as it came from the factory .
It should be fitted with a foam cover as below. If the AAPTS has been installed, you will be able to confirm it by looking at the lower air inlet below the headlight on the right side of your Spyder -right side when on the bike, left side facing the bike - if all you see is an empty mounting point (like below but without the sensor) then it has not been done.
The piece of foam that is intended to protect the tip of the sensor, the bolt and plastic nut that secures the senor to the Spyder are all included in the PDI kit which is shipped in the storage compartment.
The foam cap can be seen in the PDI kit on the right. Not sure where this is now!
    Be aware and check yours.
Look at my pics this is where it should be

I can't believe this is STILL happening. This was reported as a somewhat common problem over 2 years ago --- dealers NOT doing proper PDI!

What's next--- these same dealers will hear about DPS problems 2 years from now?

It has been awhile since I've had those panels off. But I remember seeing the Bosch sensor there.

    Default Checked sensor....

Used a flashlight and took a look thru the left air vent (not where the fog lights would go, but the smaller opening just below), and mine was properly installed by the dealer.

I relocated my AAPTS sensor this weekend. I also replaced my BRP exhaust gaskers with the Honda's. Also replaced the air filter with stock since the one it clearly had oil issues. Now the Spyder is running smoother and the temp changes faster. Before it would change a couple degrees at the most every couple of minutes but now I saw a 5 - 7 degree change in less than a minute.

The attached is where the sensor was located. Now it's positioned properly on the right side. But I'm still not 100% positive which change-out improved the Spyder performance. Maybe all three? The BRP gaskets were not as bad as I thought they would be. In fact they look pretty good for 8K on them. If I were to guess it was the new filter that made the most improvement.

40mpg...not...I'm not buying that unless you're going 30 mph in 5th gear and it's all downhill...

I average about 30 now...and that's fine...I get great performance with the JB, hindle, and green filter....bike is plenty peppy and the mileage is back to where it should be (after tweaking the JB after the second update)...

The pics seem to show the situation for the RS..... How about for the RT? Does it get put into a shipping position that needs to be changed during PDI? How can I check my sensor?

I've been noticing a higher ambient temp than I think it actually is, but the machine runs fine and I've been getting 35 - 37 mpg. Can anyone guide me?

    Thanks, Bill

Man I tried to do a search for this a month ago. Must have "msispleled" ambient. Hey at least you didn't have take off as much tupper ware as I did to get it put in the right location!

My Spyder sat in the showroom for a year before I came along and snatched it up so this mislocated sensor issue may be old, but fairly new to me. Bottom line, corrected.
