Simple RAM Mount for the RT
Wanting to use my existing GPS on my RTS, I added the simple RAM mount shown here. First, remove one existing thin-head M10 x 40 mm handlebar screw. Retain the washer. You will need the following materials:
Retained M10 washer - stainless
M10 ID x 19 mm L (3/8" x 3/4") chrome spacer - modified
RAM-B-253U mount
M10 x 1.50 x 60 mm socket head screw
Blue threadlocker (Loctite)
I could not readily find a stainless steel spacer, so I used chromed steel. To fit it in the bottom of the tapered handlebar recess, I put a bolt through it, tightened it with a nut, chucked it in a drill, then ground it down to a slightly smaller diameter for the last 1/8" or so. I coated the ground part with acrylic spray to inhibit rust. A machine shop could probably turn you a spacer of the correct diameter and length out of stainless or high tensile strength aluminum. Standard spacers are English units, even when advertised as metric. A 5/8" spacer would be long enough, but my supplier only had 1/2" and 3/4". A half inch spacer is too short to avoid interference between the mount and the handlebar assembly.
Reinstall the existing stainless washer, then the spacer, and the mount. Use the new, longer screw to secure everything. The original screws have ScotchGrip threadlocker. Enough epoxy remains in the hole to probably secure the new screw, but I used some Loctite to be certain. Torque the screw to 28 lbf-ft (38 N-M). The mount will probably turn when you tighten, so you will have to experiment with the starting position to get it where you want it in the end.

Good work Scotty.

Sweet!
Very elegant design, Scotty! BTW, it's not that I'm necessarily slow, I just haven't read many of the RT threads...

Great Idea Scotty , My take was close to that- I used a M10 1 inch ball from Twisted Throttle. It comes with a m10 X 1.25 bolt which I discarded and used the 60mm screw like Scotty. This mount allowed me not to have to use a spacer as the spacer is built in to the ball. I then used a 2 inch RAM extension and viola.

I remember I guy who once called me because the bolt head on one bolt he got was 1mm smaller than the other 3.
I call that real attention to detail for sure.
Now he's not even using stainless hardware to match the others!
Nice Job looks good!

Couldn't find one handy, and was too lazy to order one. Couldn't find a stainless spacer, either. I actually like the look of the black on the black bracket, but I haven't had a chance to powdercoat one yet.
Did anyone ever tell you you are mean and cruel?

Now you're starting to scare me. Does that mean we are related?

I could not locate an M10 ball mount on their site? M6, M8...but no M10. Suggestions?

I sure hope that this 17-year old-doesn't machinist doesn't get a cease and desist order from AACOA, Douglas Alexandria, Alpha Metal, Bonnell Aluminum, GSP Coatings, Liberty Anodizing, or Waterloo Electroplating & Metal Finishing, since, you know, they all thought up that idea of anodizing before she did...
Can we get the complete spelling of her name and formal address.
RAM does hold a current patent on this design of ball mount, however nobody holds a current patent on the common anodizing process.
As a teacher I am sure you can understand the value in "intellectual property" and why it must be protected.
If a person has thought of something and spent the time and money to file for and get a patent, than they have a right to it's protction under the law. No matter if it may seem "small" to us to do so.
Matter of fact, every case of infringement that they know of but do not enforce, can actually weaken their patent if they were to need to enforce it against a big infringement case in the future.
I know it may seem stupid and small peanuts for something like this, but with the skill daughter is already showing, someday when she has patents of her own maybe it will make more sense to her then.
However, it was very nice craftsmanship in the production though.

Just got mine in. Works great. Now can mount my 660, HD video cam, or my iPhone. I agree on price though, it is way out of line compared to other RAM mounts that I have purchased.
Thanks.

DaBusses, back in January you posted about installing mirror thread ball and ram mount extension, the last post I saw was picture to follow. Will you post a picture of it on your and are you still satisfied with it?
