Stock muffler mods
Has anyone removed the Cat from the stock muffler? Should help flow a bit without a large increase in sound......anyone?

You may not get a lot of replies as that action would be illegal. It may not be something folks would want to state on a public forum. Just MHO.

I was wondering the same thing. The Hindle is too loud for my taste, but the stock is too tame. Something in between would be great. Maybe drill a few holes in the pipe . . . sounds like a "you may be a redneck" modification!

Why do you want the extra weight of the stock pipe? Plus, even with holes, it's gonna rob your hp a little. Just go with an aftermarket...there are plenty to choose from...in addition, the stock is big and ugly, IMHO...
As far as the hindle goes, I love mine...wouldn't go with anything else...

I had a custom dual supertrap on my spyder for a while. Removed it in favor of the stock pipe. It may be heavier than aftermarket pipes but it don,t hurt my head and it has the cat. making it cleaner and legal. I would make it quieter if I could. Loud pipes scare the deer!

It should also be mentioned that regardless of what muffler you run - you should be wearing proper ear protection. Ear protection is for both wind noise and pipe noise.... so you most likely won't hear it anyway.
I really like the Hindle. The stock pipe has the cat built in--- but I think the RT has a different setup with the cat beneath the bike-- before the muffler.
Spyder #1 - 2008 GS SM5 Premier Edition #1977. RIP after 80,000 miles.
Spyder #2 - 2012 RT SM5. Traded in after 24,000 miles.
Spyder #3 - 2015 F3 SM6. Put 13,000 miles on and sold it.
Spyder #4 - 2017 F3 SM6. Too good of a deal to pass up!

You're not the first to mention earplugs; but, with my Arai on I'm not hearing much of anything. I can barely pick up the sound of the stock 'tootsie roll' muffler with my helmet on.

Buy a louder exhaust because you like the sound and then wear ear protection to muffle the sound? Seems a little contradictory. Seriously, is there an aftermarket exhaust that is inbetween the stock and the Hindle?

I think most buy an aftermarket exhaust for the performance increase - not just because they are louder.
The Hindle is about the quietest aftermarket pipe I've heard. Some of the other brands have changeable baffles and tips on the ends that alter the sound.

I am not "current" with the EPA rules, however,it was at one time( I believe still so) O.K. for an owner to modify such components without any lawbreaking. BUT, if a dealer or service facility does it there are considerable $$ penalties. That may have changed within the last few years, but I wouldn't have thought so.

Someone had a cutaway pic of the stock muffler out there on the internets... It may have been on a different forum, but if I remember correctly you cant exactly "gut" the converter on the Spyder... it'd take some serious surgery to get at the catalytic guts.. not worth your time or effort for sure.

The Leo Vince Has a removable baffle and when installed is not loud at all just deeper and throatyer (if that's a word)

You know, people here have picked on me for ear protection...I always wear it as a decibel level over 90 for any period of time WILL cause deafness...this is not debatable . Considering an open helmet allows up to 130 db and a full face is over 100, wearing plugs to block around 30 dbs is a great idea if you wish to preserve your hearing.
I wear the disposable ones...use a few times. I can still hear all road noises that I need to and can even listen to music/talk on the phone. I have a hindle and it's just loud enough without being too loud.

I cannot understand her 1/2 the time when she talks to me but I can hear her talking two rooms away, usually when she is mumbling some unkind thing under her breath about me
At any rate using hearing protection while riding is sage advise.

Hmmmm...maybe you're purposely 'selectively' hearing the wife, eh? I get accused of doing that too!!!!!!

Or maybe it's that you keep putting your earplugs in whenever your wife starts talking to you.....
