    Default Best 4-inch risers

    I'm interested in hearing opinions about the best 4-inch risers for an SE5. How difficult are they to install?

    not difficult to install at all.
    I like the 4 inchers from ESI http://www.esicycleproducts.com/ It makes a night and day difference. With risers you can ride all day and even more if need be.
    Also there is kewlmetals riser bars. www.kewlmetal.com I have never tried them but those that have them like them.

    I got the 3 inch from ESI Makes a world of difference, In retrospect i probably should have gone with the 4 inch. Very easy to install.

    I love the HeliBar riser that I had installed.

    I think others may work too. Some look a bit like an erector set approach but have more flexiibility. Some, like the HeliBar are closer to the stock look but don't have the adjustability others have.

    If I had a do-over I would still do the HeliBar.

    I have the 1" riser with the 3" ESI riser on top...so, effectively, I have a 4" riser...I don't think you can go wrong with anything that Evan/ESI offers. Great stuff.

    As far as kewlmetal goes, I have one of their mods on my bike and I have the foot pegs, but I haven't gotten to them yet...they are a good company too...

    Thanks to everyone!

    Has anyone tried both the Kewlmetal and ESI risers? Any opinion on what would work well for a really short rider? These would be for my wife, who is 4' 10".

    Hand numbness has been a problem. Do these help that problem specifically?

    yes, it is. However you can dry-fit them together before you cut to get an idea what they will be like... and change your mind. (but you won't!). Either company (ESI or Kewlmetal) is great. Kewlmetal does have a new version out that seem to be more adjustable, and the video on their site looks pretty "kewl". Haven't seen feedback from anyone who has tried them though.

    I have the ESI 4" risers.They are great and changed the way the handles and steers.Yes you have to cut the handlebars to install, But I have seen one that did not cut the bars (Putt Putts from Spooner wi.

    I have a SM5 with the 1" BRP riser and the 4" ESI risers and it's great (I got lucky).

    Now if you have the 1" riser installed they do recommend that you go with no more than a 3" riser, but not sure if that holds true with the SE5 or not.

    You could also go with Kewlmetal for more of a pull back or the Helibars if you want to retain your center console.

    I m 6 ft tall and use the 4 in ESI risers. I used to get sore wrists and my hands would go numb in about 30 minutes of riding,plus a pain between the shoulder blades. These problems were eliminated with the use of the risers.

    I m speculating on the price, but if you want to put a set of stock,uncut handlebars back on, the price of them is not too outrageous, like $40..??

    I have installed both the risers in ? . Both get the job done, but the new one by Kewlmetal, has 3 ways of adjustment. This alone makes them much better, plus if you use them as a more of a pull-back system, then they accept the addition of the ISCI hand brake system w/out any modification.

    Having installed both, I wish the Kewlmetals had been availible when I went to do that part of modification to my wifes .

    Check out this thread,http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...ight=kewlmetal Joan worked with Kewlmetal to get things just right for her as she is only 5'2" I believe. I think they finally got what she was looking for.

    I love my ESI 3 inch risers with the BRP 1 inch riser. I have them pulled back a bit and that makes for a more comfortable rider for me and I got to keep my stock look. Just personal preference I suppose and of course comfort.

    Yes, my ESI risers completely eliminated my shoulder pain. For neck pain I ended up going with a Carbon Fiber helmet from HJC, so much lighter than my old helmet and made a heck of a difference. After replacing my seat with a Russell Day-Long, no more back or butt pain either. So, you will have to look at a lot of factors. The shoulder pain kind of a burning sensation between the shoulder blades and the shoulders themselves though was taken care of with my risers. Hope this information is helpful to you. I am sure the Kewlmetal risers will accomplish the same goal.

    Thanks, that helps alot and and improves my outlook. I rode 250 miles yesterday, which is long for me. My neck/upper back pinched so bad I was about ready to start walking. I know my helmet is a problem also. It's a high quality full face helmet, but it is pretty darn heavy. I think I'm going to start looking for something as light as possible that still offers reasonable protection. I also have already bought new risers (not installed yet), and then found out about the new adjustable ones .

    I can tell you from the perspective of being a sports med. doctor that being more upright is far better for shoulder biomechanics and for your c-spine.

    Don't be mad if you bought the ESI risers. Even though they may not have the adjustability of the new Kewlmetal ones, they are still an excellent riser. You do have some adjustability with them, as I have mine more pulled back and my husband has his more upright. They are an excellent product. You will find the handling of your spyder to be better all around and I am sure you will notice a difference in the pain in your upper back.

    Yes and a big NO.
    I have the ESI 4" risers on my SE5, one, if not THE one, best mod. The big NO comes from the install - I was one of the people who had to really work at getting the amount of cable slack required for the install. I was not impressed with the quality of the finish at the price, I would give that a C. The instructions for doing an SE5 rated a D or D- . So, great end result, worse install to date.

    If I needed to do another riser install, I would do the Kewlmetal ones, in a heartbeat.

    The big ergonomic payoff for me with the risers was that they allowed me to sit further back on the seat and take the pressure off my knees (being pushed apart, bowlegged style) - they were always aching after the first 150 miles. I didn't have any neck, back or shoulder pressures from the stock bars. I am 5'7", with a 29" inseam.

    If your worried about hand cramps, i suggest installing handgrips with rubber inserts. Also some bar end weights available in many cool styles. And last but not least a throttle boss. This along with risers of your choice will result in what i consider very comfortable for all day riding.

    Actually, I put on the throttlemeister that really helped with vibration and the like...then, with the ESI risers, all the vibration was effectively eliminated...no question that risers really dampen the vibration a lot...

    With cramps, you have to be certain you aren't squeezing too tightly...like with a golf club...yikes!

    I also have the Throttlemeister that helps a lot, as does my throttle rocker. My hands no longer cramp up or fall asleep.

    Add that to the 1" BRP riser and the 4" ESI risers I have along with my Corbin seat, I'm all set. A hand brake and highway pegs would be all I need for the ulimate comfort. My knees start to bother me after about 1 to 1 1/2 hours of riding without a break.

    And so you know, I am 5' 3" with a 30" inseam.

    The stock Spyder grips leave a lot to be desired. I put PM Renthal grips on my Harley, which eliminated the vibration problems. I've never tried anything that worked as well. I'd like to put something similar on the Spyder.

    After buying the PM Renthal grips, I read a number of posts that Avon Contour grips offered the same comfort for about half he price. (They appear to be a PM Renthal clone.)
