Installed a Rear Spring Kit instead of a Rear Shock - this is the Trick!

My wife & I acquired a 2014 Spyder RTS; on a ride we bottomed out, we were loaded. We need a new shock!

OMG $825 for a rear Elka or M2, I emailed Marcus with M2 asking if he had a less expensive shock without all the adjustability, short answer No, but he had a Great Spring kit for the Spyder Rt, $325.

I bought it & when I got the kit, he wanted me to call him to ask any questions, real personal service.

I installed it, you need to sand down the made in Mexico Stamping on the shock body, or my shock had that on it.
If I knew how to post a picture of the kit I would, impressive.

Installed & rode, I was looking for pot-holes to run over with the rear; Unbelievable!

I started riding motorcycles in 1962, & have run Konis, Progressives, IKON, & Ohlins, and this Spring kit blew my mind!

If you don't have the bucks for a rear shock, this is the Trick!

Other members have done this also ..... for way less money - WHY???? because they bought the Spring from a SPRING maker ( Eibach, Hyperco, etc. ).... there are more than a few Spring makers out there, you buy them according to size and weight capacity ..... I have recommended doing it this way for years .... Mike ....

$325 for a spring alone and shipping? You can buy Eibach or Hyperco springs for right around $100 new. Used ones can be found around $60.

For almost 50 years, I have been explaining to folks that springs support, damping controls.

Regarding the Spyder RTS you own, the spring rate is a combined rate of the coil spring, and the air ride system. The rear suspension design of a Spyder has no mechanical rising rate. The air spring is progressive and adjustable.

No doubt a rear spring rate increase can be a HUGE improvement, if the air ride system is inop, or the rider(s) are heavy.

While the new, firmer rear spring may feel better over bumps, be cautious when cornering or riding in the wet, until you have learned the limits of how the firmer spring may have reduced grip.

There is certainly is a lesson-learned for me here: if you are interested in upgrading the suspension of your Spyder, run your requirements past PMK. And then as always Search is your friend. Spend some quality time with it first. Thanks.

As a past owner of M2 shocks on my '13 RTL, I think the best part of ordering from them is the before and after sales support that Marcus offers and gives. My M2 rear shock was a fantastic improvement in both rider and passenger comfort after we got it. We still had the '13's airbag in but don't know how much it was active anymore after the new rear shock. Marcus questioned me on our weights and how loaded we tended to travel. Didn't know until now that he sold just a spring kit as well. Thanks Sanders for bringing that up.
