No helmets, no safety gear at all that I can see. They were real men back in those days. Average lifespan was mid 30's. With stuff like this. It's a wonder they made it that far!

Looks like maybe a replica Roman soldier helmet. I love the capes. Did you notice the arms on the one in dark clothing? I would pay money to see that type of race in real life. That would be more fun than a figure 8 race.
