Bad starting on my '22 RTL - any ideas?
When my 22 RTL first starts (cold start) at idle with the RPM's go up and down to 750 and often dies. Restart and the RPM is about 1350 like a choke is engaged. Warm starts no problem.
Anyone ideas?
TIA

How long has the RTL sat unused and what gas do you put into it?
If you've stored it for any amount of time the gas could be the problem unless you treated it before storage.
You might want to add some seafoam to the tank and try one tank full with it just to see if the problem goes away.

It sat for a few days. Filled the tank 3 weeks ago. Only has about 100 miles on it.

Gotcha, I would still try seafoam or some type of injector/gas treatment 1st.
Also with it starting just after the fill up, you could have gotten some bad gas.

Reason: Added bad gas statement.

Ask JetFixer, I suggest that it needs a BUD's diagnostic reset, take it to the dealer, warrantee covered.

You don’t have a fuel quality problem but a fuel control problem that needs dealership technician interaction.

I was told that the high test fuels have additives to help stablize the fuels for longer periods of time. Ethanol after a while gums up the fuel system. So if you are not going to ride for a while, I would suggest putting in 91 octane in or higher and a fuel stabilizer.
Seafoam is good to run through the fuel system to help clean out injectors.

Take it to the dealer to have the Throttle Position Sensor reset. It requires BUDS2, but only takes a minute to accomplish. I wouldn't add anything to the fuel tank unless you suspect that the last gas you put into it may have been contaminated with water. Don't ever use fuel with more than 10% ethanol, and avoid ethanol completely if possible. Even 10% ethanol has a 60 day shelf life before it undergoes phase separation, but you said this fuel is only 3 weeks old.
