There is about a half inch clearance between the stem and the drive pulley. I've had it this way for about 3.5 years and 7500 miles. It loses maybe 1 or 2psi per month mostly in the winter, so pretty similar to all of my cars and bikes.
I ordered some of these off Amazon. I think they are a good solution to the problem.
