Watched part of the movie, Full Metal Jacket this morning before I "had" to go for a ride. Some fiction but a lot of accuracies portrayed and brought back some memories from over 50 years ago. Happy Birthday.....

LOL! I remember watching FMJ right before going to Parris Island. I remember thinking ?It can?t really be that bad?.... I was right, it was worse. Lol. We couldn?t say ?I?, had to ask permission to speak/use head etc. Recruits seemed to have a lot of freedom in FMJ, wasn?t the same. I hear recruits now use ACOG on range and I saw a video.. they put a cargo net over the nasty water on ?Slide for Life?. I fell from the top, straight into that nasty water at least twice. Think the DI?s just let me skip it. First time I fell I remember hearing a DI say ?I give him 9 out of 10 for pain!?
Lol. Good times.

That?s odd. All my quotation marks changed to question marks...

I agree that the recruit treatment was "softened". I was at MCRD San Diego in 1966 and things were a bit different than what was in the movie. But we did have one murder (not a DI) and a couple of AWOLs in our platoon. It was a maturing experience and one that I will always hold close.

I always get a chuckle when I think of the time I first saw the acronym (inscribed in the head) for USMC on board the ship I was first attached. Happy Birthday!!!!

Finally logged back in so I am late wishing all the Marines a Happy 243rd Birthday.
I spent some quality time in the Navy, but my twin brother and other family members are Marines.
Thank all y'all for your service.
