I came real close to buying one of those, in orange, in 1974 or so. I ended up with an orange/crème micro bus instead. The only VW product I did not like. Many mechanical issues.

    Hi Alaska,

Re: The only VW product I did not like. Many mechanical issues.

Possibly because these had the Type 4 engine, which was a disaster for VW.

Not sure what a type 4 is...but mine was air cooled. No issues with the engine actually. My favorite was going down the road and the shift lever came out of the floor in my hand. That got my attention quick.

I had a 60 micro bus also. Top speed was about 55 (going downhill). I really liked that one. Not the one with 23 windows in it though. Those are worth over $100K these days.

One 1968 Beetle also. Paid $1,699 for that--brand new. Drove it for about 50K miles--with NO issues.

    Hi Alaska,

Re: Not sure what a type 4 is...but mine was air cooled.

VW used the Type 1 engine from the beginning to about '72 or so in the bus. And the Type 1 was always used in the bugs. Both the Type 1 & the Type 4 were 4-cylinder, flat, opposed, air-cooled engines. The Type 1 was very reliable & the Type 4 was completely unreliable.

Now, with that info, 25 yrs from now when someone asks, you call tell them all about the differences.

This sure would have made for a nice retirement package: wouldn't it?
