Longer USB cable on my 2018 RT Limited spyder PROBLEM
Hello All fellow spyder riders.
I got a good one.
I have a 2018 spyder RT Limited
The USB plug is in the frunk, but I want my iphone on the handle bars.
I was able to bring a lighting and a USB coupler cable from the frunk to the handle bars, but it will only connect to the BRP connect when the iphone battery is almost fully charged.
If I use a short lighting cable from the frunk, it works fine.
It also does not charge very fast too.
No matter what combination of cables I use, it just wont connect with a long USB cable when the Iphone is discharged.
Has any one used a powered USB hub on there spyder?
Thank you
JD

Just get a usb power outlet from Lamonster or one of the other vendors and run it to the battery or a switched supply. I got a combo outlet, usb on one side and cig lighter plug on the other. I added a separate fuse box that is wired to the battery and to a switched circuit. Then I can add up to 6 additional accessories that can be either hot or switched. I use the 12v side to plug in the battery tender.

Thank you for the post.
But I still want to connect my iphone to the spyder for' BRP connect" and other things.
I am also thinking of you idea too.

Certainly can work, IF you can find a powered hub that will accept 12 input or you use a voltage adapter to step the 12 vdc down to whatever the hub requires for an input. The ones I could find that are 12 vdc out of the box were a little pricey, but I didn't spend more than 5 minutes looking. Let us know if you go this way. I, for one, would be interested.
You need a better cable. Get a high quality usb extension cable. It must be usb 2 rated or better. Also labeled for fast charge, compatible with quick charge or something similar. Run that up to near where you want it. Then use a short lighting cable from there.

I looked at Menards online and found one, possibly the one you found, but none of the stores in my area have it and it isn't available online. Let us know how it works - there are a couple of stores in other areas I get to once in a while.

Hello Craig and all that have replied, and thank you for your posts.
Here is a picture of what I was thinking of getting.
I forgot to mention in my first post that all the cables are top of the line cables, and all have been tested and passed connecting my iphone to my other computers.
It was just the spyder that is finicky with then at some time.

That's certainly cheap enough to roll the dice on. I would try it.
Well that did not work, I wanted a powered hub not a power hub.
i tried a powered hub I had, but it did not work with the spyder and my iPhone.
Back to the drawing board. I do have another idea through.
None of the infotainment system is in the rear of the 2018 Spyder. Except of course the rear speakers and radio antenna. Everything is in the gauge cluster and 6 channel audio amp.
The usb cable goes directly into the gauge cluster. It is 2 way. It charges your phone and transfers app data to the screen. It also is used to update the gauge cluster firmware.

Since my thinking is, Where does it connect to inside the Spyder (USB). I am guessing somewhere around the infotainment system.
See if you can T-Off of that area or remove/move the USB and just run an extention cable to the front.
If they are in the same spot it would be under the right Passenger grip for the main unit. (Where all the infotainment stuff plugs into)
Just throwing out an idea.
If a 2018 diagram was avaibale it may help too.
Thank you for your input.
i was thinking of the same thing too.
chang location of connection from the fronk to some place closer to the handle bars and use a shorter cable.
Found this on the Lamonster Garage site and it looks like it will be the solution! Headed up there this week for the Spyders in the Ozarks event on my new 2018 RTL and plan to have this installed. Will report back! http://www.lamonstergarage.com/lamon...er-motorcycle/
Infotainment now is in the dash. Learned something new today
Well the problem is solved.
I routed the factory USB cable from the frunk to the handle bars, and yes, it comes from the dash.
It would have been easier just to pull the cable back up, instead of running a USB cable from the handle bars to the frunk.
Since my Iphone is now on my handle bars, you still need to follow BRP guide lines to sinks the units.
Plug in you phone and unlock it, and then turn on your spyder.
It will auto sink.
If you push you home button on you iphone to see the screen to do something else, it will not sink if you push the little button on the back of the handle bars. You will need to restart the BRP app.
