Are you letting up on the throttle when you shift? If so that will cause this as the Spyder is programmed to automatically lower the revs as it shifts. By manual lowering the revs first it confuses the computer. You may not know you are doing it.

That's right. the computer takes care of blipping the motor during the shift so you don't have to do that. And a slightly longer blip, when you're really getting on it, has been a normal part of the personality of the 998 SE5. Mine has done that ever since it came out of the crate. However, it has been reported on here that keeping your oil level towards the top of the band will tend to reduce that. Bottom line though, it's not a problem - it's a “feature”.

You don't "blip" the throttle while shifting UP.

And......if you really are keeping the throttle steady AND it was "pulling" when you shifted, a drop of 4K RPM or more certainly isn't normal.

Now.....if you shifted in a "neutral throttle" condition or had reduced the throttle slightly without realizing it, then something like that might be normal.

Yes it was low oil, but now why?? No leak, less than 10k on the engine and oil change maybe 3k ago?? Should she be burning oil ?

The twins are noted for using oil - so yes yours is normal.

It might be normal; might not.

Can't really say that unless he tells us how many miles since he last checked it AND how low it was.

My guess is that he didn't check it at all in that 3000 miles and it could have been a bit low to start with.

That's right. As a person who has owned one for 6 years - they will use more oil than the 1330. It's just their design. Now that you know where the oil level is, a couple things to do. Be sure to check it in accordance with the procedure in the owner's manual - that is, oil level is checked with the oil hot - not just coolant hot. So the best time to do that is coming back from a long ride. And check it every 300 miles - also per the manual - until you get a feel for how your particular engine operates. Expect to use a quart between oil changes under normal operating conditions. Unlike your car, the "Add" mark on the dipstick is much less than a quart. And don't panic if you accidentally overfill it a little - key word being "little". And don't go only by miles. For example, riding the Blue Ridge Parkway - running around all day in second gear at higher RPMs - will use more oil based on miles than highway cruising. Check it more often under conditions like that or if you frequently run it hard. Not sure how new you are to the machine, but it's understandable that you are sensitive to all these little operating quirks. Rest easy - nothing you have reported here indicates anything out of the ordinary with your Spyder. Read the manual, do the maintenance and enjoy your ride.
