Default Does this duck need help?

for almost two weeks, this duck has been in this one spot without moving. Some people put some water out for her. I wonder what is going on. There is no mate in site. Is she nesting or injured? And if she is injured, who can I call for help that won't just take her off and kill her?

Better to just let "her" die a slow death ??

Probably nesting. Call animal control; they can tell you what to do next.

P.S. The image is there.....kind of.....but not in a format that anybody can see it.

Is there, by chance, a SPCA or other animal rescue in your area..? they would be the best to help out...

I give money to the Humane Society. I looked at there site and found this. "Report Stray or Injured Animals / Animal Cruelty

If you have found a stray or injured animal, please call your local animal care and control agency."

I really want to avoid contacting Animal Control. That is a guaranteed death sentence. I hope she is just nesting. Does anyone know how ducks behave when nesting?

No it isn't. Where did you get that idea ?

In most places, they are prohibited from even messing with wild animals that are not posing a public safety threat.
But they can give you advice as to what YOU can or should do.

I did find the Illinois Dept of Wildlife site. They recommend just letting nature take it's course. It's sad, but wild animals, besides being more dangerous when hurt, also carry parasites.

We have a pond with ducks behind our house. Sounds like a female duck nesting. She will get up and forage when she thinks it's safe. Most domestic male ducks don't hang around after the deed is done so need to worry about him.

Ducks are low on the food chain, so will try to act healthy even if they aren't. The signs they need our help are if they are dragging a leg or wing. Limping doesn't count, that'll heal. Other than that, they are robust animals.

When I came in this morning I noticed she was gone. I looked at where she was laying and it looks to be arranged as a nest. A hurt animal would not bother making a nest. I did not see any eggs, which seemed strange. Later in the morning I saw she returned. So I think she is ok.

When I lived in Duluth, I had one duck that camped in the concrete window well leading to my basement. She hatched a family there and they could be seen walking all over my yard. Then one day they were all gone.

In Eagle River, we had a Ptarmigen (that's grouse for you outsiders), and a chick that spent the winter on our deck on one of the walkways that we did not use. They ate from our bird feeder. They both left in the spring.

Well, the duck is gone. I read somewhere that ducks will build a nest and sit on it even if not pregnant. Then they abandon it after a few weeks if there are no eggs. She was really suffering in the mid day heat. Really sad. I hope she is ok.
