Default 2011 RT Limited no Air Box

I removed the right side panels to install a J & M CB.
Looked at the top of the engine and notice the air box / scliencer is not there just the air filter.
Now I know why its makes so much noise when I roll the throttel on.
I bought it used and the original owner said He had installed a K + M air filter.
Between the two brothers muffler and the lack of air box it's noisy especially when going up hills.
The wife says its to loud.
So is this a common modification to remove the air box and install the K + M air filter?

Should I look for a used air box to quiet it down?
    Performance loss?

Air box....yes and stock filter since the K&N might not fit.

    Real muffler.....yes.

    Performance loss......maybe just the opposite.
But it will SOUND like it has less power.

    Question AirBox Removal

Didn't JT's machine shop make an adapter for an air filter that allowed removal of the air box (up through 2013 model)?

EDIT: Here is a link to JT's AirBox filter replacement:
    http://spyderstore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_68&product_id=50

I considered installing on my 2012 RT, but ended up trading it on a 2016 RT.

    Just a thought …. Ann

    Default Wrapped or not?

And I believe there's a foam pre-filter wrap that helps silence some of that air inlet noise.
Does yours already have that or is it the bare version

    Default 2011 RT air filter

Wow never thought of a foam pre filter.
    Yup it's just a bare K + N filter.
Have to look for the foam pre filter.
    Thanks

I put JT' air box on my 2012 rt when I changed plugs. I also added the pre filter at the same time and have benn happy with it. I did not notice any significant power increase or change in mileage change. I also have not done anything to the exhaust. I ride my RT long distance and noise would make that unpleasant. Ido notice more intake roar under hard acceleration, seems ok just cruising.

If it keeps your "Best Half" happy: buy the parts, and put the affected systems back to their stock configurations...
You can probably even buy the parts from someone in here!

    Default Curious...🤔

Are you saying the top of the OEM airbox was left off...?? if so you should find /buy a replacement and that will fix the noise problem. If it has the JT or Kewl Metal type filter the pre foam will help quite a bit. The exhaust is a choice as there are many out there with different sounds. If you want to eliminate that noise you can find stock pipes quite easily.

    Default 2011 TR air box

No the air box and noise attenuating system is gone, just a bare 6" round air filter / top plate mounted to the top of the engine.

Very loud roar on acceleration, sounds like a big block Chevy sucking air. Dose not go much faster but it makes a lot of noise.

And this is when just keeping up with my buddies @ 60 or so in the hills or on ramps.

    Very annoying

The Foam Prefilter is sold through Jt's website, I put the link in my earlier post.

We have the JT's air filter with the prefilter as well. Noticed a little increase in noise but not much at all. And if it was noisy, my other half would of already had me reinstall the OEM filter contraption.

Not sure if maybe the prefilter lessens the noise, as ours has always had one. You can order the Prefilter separately, maybe install it and see if the noise lowers to a reasonable level.

    Default 2011 Rt Air Box

Thanks for the pre filter tip.

I called JT as I'm not sure what size pre filter I need with the K + M filter.

JT said to check and see what color the top plate is: Blue it's his, if Black (CC metal or something).

Check filter diameter and get back to him. So I will check these things and order a pre filter.

I them called the original stating the with the 2 bros exhaust and the lack of air box the bike was very noisy. He did not know where the air filter kit came for but did have the original muffler which he gave me.

So hopefully by adding the pre filter and original muffler the bike will be much quiter.

    Thanks again for the help.
