    Default Millage

I'm curious about the milage you getting on spyders before any major maintenance requirements.. I was recently told by Harley Dealer, at about 35,000 miles, valve jobs were an issue. Mybe for 993, but didn't the 1330 engine resolved the high dollar maintenance issue?

Your Harley dealer is full of ! Read your operator's guide, specifically the service schedule at the back of the manual. The 1330 engine has hydraulic valve lifters that require no adjustment. If you have a 1330 engine, once you get 3,000 or so miles on it, also that's when your first service is due, you should notice improvement in mileage depending on how you treat the fun handle.

Default Hmm.. a Harley Dealer said that Spyders were high maintenance??

Well, it is true you need to maintain any conveyance, but I wouldn't consider our Spyders to require any more than our Harleys did, especially now with the 1330 platform. Hondas were the least in our experience. JMO. Tires and Oil with a 9300 mi change interval (best so far), and tires according to your preference for wear and performance and you're good to go.

    Default Relax.....

You do not need any valve adjustments on the 1330 triple engines. Oil changes are now at 9300 or a year for that engine and the only item that need special attention at 28,000 miles it the transmission filter which now internal but easy enough to replace. Ryde and enjoy and stop asking Harley folk for maintenance advise on Can Am Roadsters...

    Default major maintenance requirements.....

Just did my 28k service on my 1330. The major requirement is a young body to do all the stooping and bending that's required. That is, if you don't have a lift.

No valve inspections required on 1330. The 990/998's say to do valve inspections at 14K. I did two. One at 14K on the 2008 and one at 28K on the 2010 RT.

In both cases--neither Spyder needed any adjustment. In both cases, the extra cost was plus $800. (hundred). The mechanic screwed up the job on the 2010 by not changing out the gasket. It leaked oil over the off season. They had to fix it on their dime in the spring.

I also own a 2011 and do not plan on doing a valve inspection until at least 50K--if then. We are experiencing no issues at 30K so far.

The HD guy was partially right--just not on the mileage.

I consider myself the "valve inspection" beta tester. Your Welcome.

RE Mileage: WARNING, WARNING, WARNING--YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.

I currently am getting 39 mpg on my 1330 and 30 mpg on the 998. I have started using 87 octane as a test. It also saves me between 20 and 40 cents per gallon. That adds up to a few $$ over a season with two Spyders drinking gas almost daily.

I now note that there does NOT seem to be any performance issues by going down from 90 (our Premium). This has been my AVERAGE MILEAGE since day one and over 5 machines. Yes--the accountant in me does a check most of the time.

Note: I changed the word "jobs" to "inspections" in keeping with the owners manual language. Sorry for the confusion.

    No they don't.

They say to do a valve lash inspection and adjustment.

The term "valve job" implies removing the heads and grinding the valves and seats or other major repairs.

Using the right words is important.

Respectfully disagree--it's the semantics. What I refer to as a valve job--required inspection of the valves (what you refer to as a valve lash inspection) to see if they needed replacing or shimming. In both cases, they were looked at and nothing needed to be done. Hence, my mention that $800 (a labor intensive process) was spent each time for nothing.

I've always thought of a valve job as having them ground or replaced.

I had air cooled VW bugs in the past and valve gap setting was a regular thing to do on them because of wear.

Without hydraulic lifters it's a necessity to keep the valve gap proper or a valve job will be needed because of the valves getting burnt.

Thanks for your inputs. How many miles are on your spyders? I have a 14 RT-S with 10,000 miles and have done nothing but 3000 mile check-up and yearly Dealer oil changes.

You're doing just fine. Stick to the maintenance schedule in your operator's guide and you should have no problems. Do check with your dealer though and see what they say about the fuel filter change interval. On our '14s it says 19,000 but in 2016 they extended the interval to 28,000 for exactly the same filter by part number. My dealer said doing it at 28K intervals would be fine.

You can disagree all you want.....and you can call it what ever you want but........

The simple fact IS that if you walk into 99.999% of the vehicle repair shops around the world and ask for a "valve job" they will not understand what you THINK you are saying.

    Proper semantics is important.

In case you have not noticed, I went back and changed all the references to valve jobs. They now say valve inspection. Gotta get them semantics right for the word police.
