I bought a RS today and called AAA, my former insurance company but they said they no longer insure spyders.

Best rate I got was with Progressive but it still ain’t cheap for a 2015 RTL. One thing going for me though is they don’t delineate between 2 wheel time and car time so I was able to claim 40 years experience as opposed to 4. You may not have that problem and be able to get a better rate.

And if you are trying to get an out of state bike registered here get the inspection done by the CHP and save yourself a huge headache with the DMV.

I was shopping around to change ALL my vehicle and house policies about a year ago.

When it came to adding the Spyder there were problems all the time. The best compromise for me was to leave the Spyder insured with Geico.

The Hartford (via AARP) dropped all my insurances because I owned a Spyder ! All the other major companies I tried, I was met with the same answer as regards the Spyder -- a resounding "NO"

    California

    Hope you have better luck.

I've been with State Farm for over 20 years and during that time have lived in CA, AZ and UT, all with motorcycle coverage. I doubt they would cover just the motorcycle but do for me since I have all my auto, home and RV with them. The Spyder to them is just another motorcycle - they never balked at covering them. Pretty cheap, too ($200/year/Spyder) but that's here in Utah.

Default USAA member, past or present?

USAA outsources all of their motorcycle coverage to Progressive, so going direct to Progressive is probably the better approach, but if there are any issues with getting coverage at all (was really surprised to read about the issues others have had, going to have to keep an eye on that development), my experience is that USAA goes the extra mile (pun intended) to provide coverage for its members, so using that relationship if you have one might be of help.

Disclaimer: Not in/from California, so this is not at all a locally-informed suggestion.

ONLY because my other vehicles are insured by them... it isn't even considered a motorcycle, but a SPECIALTY VEHICLE.... i guess it's something like a OFF-ROAD 4X4....

. Actually, the only reason I'm not with USAA is because they sub out their motorcycle and RV insurance. Progressive was way more expensive than State Farm for those items, plus more restrictions (don't remember what they are - it's been awhile). So, I've stayed with State Farm.

State Farm here forever also. MN, WI, IN, AK Still carry full coverage on both the 11 and the 14 RT's. $44 and $35 per month. They also have my car, my Vulcan, and my home.

Guessing CA may not be so good.

Same state (NY), so it's not a state underwriting thing. Does NY require insurance cos to register by county, like some southern states do?

    No: it's a State-wide thing.
I'm betting that they just don't write below the Tappan Zee Bridge...

    Default In CA ....

.... another part to my story

The Hartford (I had house, car and truck with them), when I asked to add the Spyder, gave me a choice.
Sell the Spyder to keep my insurance !! The fact I even owned a Spyder, which was then insured by Geico, disqualified me from any insurance with them.

Their reason --- the Spyder is a 3 wheel vehicle and therefore "inherently unsafe" !!
I spoke to the manager and explained the Spyder dynamics in full -- his reply -- "don't know anything about THAT, it's a company policy"

No brainer then -- I cancelled all my policies with them. Went with Ameriprise (through Costco) and saved a little money. Bike still with Geico.

Congrats on finding a solution. Sometimes owning a Spyder can feel like having a pre-existing condition I guess

Default Another one for State Farm

I had Allstate till I moved to CA. Seeing as the house was with State Farm and they offered great discounts for multiple cars, home, earthquake etc I switched. The only thing is they do not treat it like the other vehicles when it comes to mileage benefits and multiple vehicles but there are enough others to get that benefit...

AARP should be doing a better job for us in this area as opposed to just viewing us as a market for health and life insurance.

If you have any veterans in the family, USAA does insure Spyders.

I also had it with California Casualty before I switched to USAA.

That's news to me. I didn't go with USAA because they refer motorcycles to Progressive, which I will not use.

AARP is not an insurance company. They get commissions from the insurance companies who carry their 'brand'. Most of their income as a nonprofit is from insurance commissions.
