Put your foot on the brake pedal to start if it's in gear.

After it starts the transmission will go to neutral until you shift it into gear.

when I last parked it I intentionally didn’t set the parking brake so I could roll it to get to the rear tire to check my tire pressure. Not sure if that had anything to do with it ..?

Try setting the parking brake after you turn the key on, then try starting.

not starting
At this point I would try disconnecting the battery, give it at least 5 minutes and reconnect. Hopefully will reset the computer.

You need to explain in more detail what you mean by will not start. So you turn on the key. Press the mode button when asked on the screen. Make sure the engine stop switch is in the run position. Press down on the brake pedal. Press the engine start button. What happens then? Absolutely nothing happens? Or do you hear a click noise? Or do you hear a click noise and gauge display goes blank and reboots?

That wouldn't make a difference. I always park mine in my garage with the brake off so I can move it around.

The engine starts first. That spins the oil pump in the HCM. That creates oil pressure. When the engine reaches idle speed for the first time after start. The shift computer tells the HCM to shift into neutral.

If the OP disconnected and reconnected the battery as suggested and the Spyder started it's possible one of the terminal connections had loosened just enough to interrupt the healthy jolt needed to start it and reconnecting the cables solved the problem. We won't know until he confrims what action(s) he took that solved the problem.
Artillery lends dignity to what would
otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

His post is not clear. So loose cable, could be? That has the same symptoms as a dead battery. There was no description of what happened when it would not start.
Disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes is just a waste of time. But could have fixed it accidently this time.

I had a very strange situation with my Spyder when it was about two years old. During the winter it one day cranked very slowly barely enough to start, took a couple of tries to get to start then ran fine for remainder of day, starting and stopping several times running errands. After it happened a second day I pulled battery out, took it to dealer, had tested and found in fine shape. Reinstalled in bike and had same problem following day. Took bike to dealer, told them I didn't need it for remainder of week. They left it in unheated warehouse for remainder of week, hauled it out on a Saturday and it started right up without them doing anything, absolutely no hesitation. Picked up bike and it has started flawlessly ever since. ???

We just got home from church. To give y’all some more details I didn’t set the parking brake when I rode it about 5 days ago so I could move it forward or backward to access the rear tire air stem. After I checked my rear tire pressure I just left it. I went to start it today and when I turned the key on I first noticed the gear indicator saying it was in 1st gear. I pushed the start button ... nothing. I then set the parking brake then attempted again, it still shows it’s in 1st gear.
Ill go out and disconnect the battery for a while (greater than 5 minutes) and try that. My battery is still in great shape. I’ll see if by some chance my terminal connections came loose when I disconnect one of the terminals.
Mill report back after I do that.
Tgank you for all of the helpful advice ..! Great forum .!!

My thinking on this is ..... The bike will never start without some electricity, at some level of power .... the pump doesn't work without the engine providing the power to run the pump ...... So WHY would juice from a JUMP ( on a battery that's putting out max juice ) make my Transmission go into Neutral ???? ........ I'm not trying to obstinate or obtuse about this .....but I'm not seeing the logic in your solution ..... hence my Catch 22 - phrase ...... thanks again for your input .......... Mike
Your Spyder will start in any gear. It does not have to be in neutral. If your Spyder does not start and it is in gear. It is not because it is in gear. Because it does not have to be in neutral to start. For safety reasons if your Spyder is in gear. BRP has added the extra step of making you apply the brake. After the engine has started. A SE model will shift to neutral on it's own.
So you have dead battery and it will not start. Then you attach jumper cables and it starts. Not really a mystery there.
