    Default WTF

Ca. DMV said since my totaled 2010 has been licensed since 2015.. I have to pay back registration fees and penalties totals $1,808. I told them, I just bought it from a dealer and had no control over the last 3 years. I was then pretty speechless because if I would have opened my mouth I couldnt guarantee anything but 4 letter words and I really wanted to slap that condisending little smile off her face. Sorry that's the law she said.

I almost paid but, it just didn't seem right. I did talk to the dealer and they said it sounded wrong to them and they would see what they could do......we will see if they come through. But if they do.. I still have a month wait for an appointment or like yesterday showed up at 7am for them to open at 8 and still didnt talk to the first dmv rep until 0930. If not I guess I have a friend in Utah I trust. Trailer to him and license it there for a year..

    Damm ca. Bull

Wouldn't be so bad.. but I was excited after the month of work I put into this wrecked machine to get on it and ride.

Phil, I remember when my FIL passed and they went to sell his "Home", it was a mobile home that had been built in to the ground at a Senior village. Turn's out he'd never renewed the tags or registration on that mobile home. CA got thousands in back fee's out of the sale of the "house".

Buyer beware. I thought you bought this from an insurance company. Got a 'deal' you said. Maybe not such a smart purchase?

We lived in Mesa, AZ back in the 80's. We sold a vehicle to a person through a private transaction. In AZ at the time, the tags went with the vehicle and it was the buyer's responsibility to transfer them. Sometime after the tags expired, we got a notice from the state saying that our vehicle had been found abandoned near Sky Harbor and that we owed the cost of towing and storage for the vehicle as well as for renewal of the outdated registration. I had to prove to them that we had sold it over a year previous by showing them the bill of sale. We sure were glad that that "little piece of paper" didn't get lost or we would have had to pay quite a few green rectangles for that episode!

Jury is still out on if it's a deal.. I will say I've wanted a spyder for a long time.. now I have one, so either way after this is all done.. I'm still happy

And I turned the wrench on every fix so far. To some maybe that's work.. to me I loved working on it and still have more to do!

    Hi BoilerAnimal,

Re: We lived in Mesa, AZ back . . .

About 35 yrs ago, I sold a pickup to some guy; typical cash sale. About a year later, I get a ticket in the mail from a city about 100 miles away. It had been parked overtime on a parking meter. It did take a fair amount of B***s*** with the city to convince them that I had sold it.

Now, the Oregon DMV has an 0n-line form that can fill out & send in, via your computer, to inform them that you have sold the vehicle & who to.

IMO all states should do something like this.

South Carolina has the best DMV I ever used. You walk in, someone greets you and asks what you need. They then give you the correct forms and a number. You sit down with a clipboard, fill out the forms and wait for your number to be called. In and out in about an hour.

    Hi timeless,

    Re: called a title transfer?????????????????????

No; the title transfer & the costs of it, are the responsibility of the buyer.

It is a Bill of Sale: http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/Forms/DMV/501fill.pdf

As I said, you can do it all on-line.

    Hi Grandpot,

Re: South Carolina has the best DMV

Back in the '50's the Oregon DMV was the worst outfit of all the state agencies. Now, you can do almost everything on-line.

I think I'd take it back to the dealer and ask for my money back. After they get it straightened out then buy it again.

    Default I agree but

the seller is responsible to complete the seller's portion of the title including mileage and signature. I guess the buyer could just sit on the title but without completion current plating is not possible so a signed & notarized bill of sale could be very helpful in that case.

    Ok let's compare:

    North Dakota Population: 755,000
    California Population: 40 Million
    Sacramento Region: 1.4 Million

I would imagine that it might take a bit longer at the DMV in California when yiu consider that one mid-sized town in California is twice the size of the entire state of ND. I have found that if I make an appointment, I am in and out in 1/2 hour or less.

No I bought it from a dealer.

He was a used motorcycle dealer.
And I'm waiting to hear back from them.. they said I shouldn't have been charged the back registration and penalties. But the person that handles paperwork was out. I'm not gonna hold my breath, but I will give them a chance.

Ref taking it back.. even if I could. I've put to much time into fixing it.. good deal or not I want to ride this thing

Somewhere you said you bought it from an insurance company, no?

I think by 'dealer' Patti was thinking you meant a Can-Am dealer.

His beef is with the SELLER, not the DMV.
Having to catch up on back registration fees is normal procedure in most, maybe all, of the states.

I agree. The outrage is misplaced. Why is it always easier to blame the government? Sure does shift the blame away from the blamer.
