Phil, that's waht happens when you live in state controlled by Dem. progressive's. In Colorado you always take the plates off of whatever you sell that is licensed and the buyer has to go to DMV with the title and Bill of Sale to get temp tags or at least that is how its supposed to work. Sold a car onec and left the tags on, month later I get a bill for the toll road and in fighting it was told to take the tags off, ended up payinf the jerk's toll fee of $32.

Hi mikeinco,
Re: state controlled by Dem. progressive's.
HORSE PUCKEY!!!!!!
This has not one thing to do with any Dem or Rep. It only has to do with state law.
Here in Oregon, the plates stay with the vehicle when it is sold; with certain exceptions.
I just sold a pickup. I had veteran's plates on it. The buyer was not a veteran. The state DMV would not let him keep the veteran's plates, he had to buy new plates.
He, graciously, sent them to me & I now have them on my replacement vehicle.

Hi Jerry,
Not for arguments sake. Or political.
In PA. the registered plates are to the owner & vehicle. Sell vehicle, you transfer the plate to your new one or give it back (free) to PENNDOT.
I think the system works well.
This keeps a registered plate with a single owner.

Hi ameobe,

My roommate, when I was stationed in France & a very good friend for over 50 yrs, was from Michigan. He told me it was that way in Michigan.
I have no problem with how each state does it.
I do have a problem with blaming it on any political party; that is simply not the case.
It is usually about state revenue.

Vehicles are about the only thing that states collect sales tax over and over and over, for a used item. Well.. that and real estate.

Pete, Again not here for arguing. But in PA. if a car is sold multiple times, PA sales tax applies. I am not much up on real estate, but being PA. yes, every sale.

I do believe I've owned at least one wretched bike. It was easy to do an oil change on it, but everything else was a major pain. The bike was a conglomerate of used parts from previously totalled bikes.

[QUOTE=Philrs;1353253]Ca. DMV said since my totaled 2010 has been licensed since 2015.. I have to pay back registration fees and penalties totals $1,808. I told them, I just bought it from a dealer and had no control over the last 3 years. I was then pretty speechless because if I would have opened my mouth I couldnt guarantee anything but 4 letter words and I really wanted to slap that condisending little smile off her face. Sorry that's the law she said.
I almost paid but, it just didn't seem right. I did talk to the dealer and they said it sounded wrong to them and they would see what they could do......we will see if they come through. But if they do.. I still have a month wait for an appointment or like yesterday showed up at 7am for them to open at 8 and still didnt talk to the first dmv rep until 0930.

Somebody just tell me what state registration and licensing requirements have to do with liberal, conservative, Republican, or Democrat? I have lived in red states and blue states and I've never yet met a DMV that was efficient and nice to deal with. Stop making up ridiculous political BS.

I think that was what I was saying, but to be sure, you should check with Pete.

If it was an inoperable vehicle and not ride on the roads you should be able to get an exemption for back fees.
look here as you have some work to do https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...zfvcN3ewR2w!!/

Sorry to hear that Phil, I hope you get it all figured out quickly.
Not exactly the same but here in CT my dad bought a 7x16 enclosed trailer back in 2005 for storage. A friend hauled it home on a dealer plate and then he used it for storage for 10 years. In 2015 he no longer needed it so he gifted it to me. When I went to register it I got stuck with the initial sales tax that he never paid on it. I had a feeling it was coming so I wasn't shocked.

I would imagine that it might take a bit longer at the DMV in California when yiu consider that one mid-sized town in California is twice the size of the entire state of ND. I have found that if I make an appointment, I am in and out in 1/2 hour or less.
The DMV can be awesome if you use common sense and SET AN APPOINTMENT in advance! Sure you may not get an appt for a few days to a couple of weeks but hell that beats going there and waiting around for hours and then bitching about it.... Poor planning on a persons' part does make it an emergency on theirs!
I had a 12:30 appt today, got there 15mins early, checked in, waited all of 2 mins, got called and was done by the time my 12:30 appt time rolled around!
