    Default Can Am Roadside Assistance

Sorry I need to understand something.. first my battery in my 2015 Spyder which ahas been on a trickle charger is completely dead... I called the road side assistance who said they are not really equipped to do anything to a Spyder but tow it to a dealer. The are afraid to jump the battery because they have cars and it might explode. This is road side assistance? I called Can Am and a manger said as far as I know it’s tow to the dealer only. I’m like this can’t be real. My dealer and assume most are closed Sunday which is when I called.. if I am far from home this is the help? Ridiculous.

    Default Roadside Assistance

There is Always a small issue when it comes to 'ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE'. Sundays and Bikes seem to be that small problem. 'AAA' sent me a tow truck even though I ASKED for a flat bed truck.

Unless the battery in your Spyder is grossly defective it will not explode if connected correctly to a car-sized battery. That is just BS. Most battery explosions are caused by a build up of hydrogen gas above the plates. A well ventilated battery should not have this problem - but remember, no smoking or sparks near the top of the battery.....ever!

Putting a battery on a trickle charger may not be the smartest move. You could be calcifying the plates over time. Best bet is to use a battery maintainer. A maintainer will switch off the charging circuits when the battery reaches a full condition and then switch back on if/when it needs to be charged.

Number one, get one of Lamonster's Battery packs and keep it charged. It will jump your Spyder easily, and recharge your phone! Second if you don't have that you can jump it from your car or truck, just don't start the car or truck and you will be fine!

Pirate gave you the best solution, IMO. Even after two trips to Spyderfest and many thousands of absolutely trouble-free miles before and after, I had just a bit of an absolutely unnecessary nagging feeling in my gut before launching solo for UT and the Red Rocks rally last year. My Spyder never missed a beat. You have a very reliable machine;relax and enjoy the ryding.

In the "old days" when riding with Hardley's, we used to have the tail gunner tow a peach basket. Something to pick up all the Hardley parts that vibrated off.

With the Spyder perhaps you need a flat bed truck for tail gunner?

Happy to say that during my ownership of five assorted 's and 140,000 miles of travel in Alaska, Hawaii and Canada, I have never had to call roadside assistance. The upside--they probably would have laughed at me anyway. Been five hundred to a thousand miles from the nearest dealer many times.

I look forward to the days when I can ride in the lower 48. At least the distance to dealers is a little less there.

BRP roadside assistance is a joke. You get a $200.00 allowance for towing only. No other services are provided. And that $200 will not get you very far. The one time I used it the tow was about 22 miles to a dealer and I had to pony up another $30.00. Add roadside assistance to your insurance, it's far better coverage.

Thought I read where the Garmin's have a listing of Spyder dealers, wonder how up-to-date that is.

Don't have one, but am guessing the list will somehow not be up to date. Things change to fast these days to keep up on things like that.

If you you want a good "included" roadside service join the American Motorcyclist Association AMA. Besides the other benefits they include a roadside service that will cover any vehicle you drive, with gas service, towing, starting and there may be more but I don't remember, go to www.americanmotorcyclist.com/ for a complete list.

You can get the updated list as a file that can be uploaded to your Spyder from the BRP website, But I also have SpyderCodes on my phone
The BRP page is as current as BRP keeps it. https://can-am.brp.com/spyder/owners...se-update.html

Remember there are folks all around the country listed as "Spyders to the Rescue" and can help you out on the road. Spyder Codes lists them and they are on the home page as well.

    • How can you be far from home if your battery is on a trickle charger?
    • What kind of trickle charger? If it left your battery completely dead, how were you able to start it to get 'far from home'?
    • 12v is 12v is 12v. Doesn't matter whether it's in a boat, a car or a motorcycle. It's not going to explode if it's jumped from a car battery.

I went on a 7,300 road trip last summer no problems. Did go to a dealer in Pa to get an oil filter so I could do an oil change.

To expand on a previous suggestion:

If you really were using a "dumb" trickle charger, it might actually have CAUSED the problem by overcharging over time.
A maintenance charger used like that needs to be a "smart" automatic one of low capacity......but they need not be expensive.
Ones around 2 amps can be had for about $30.

THEN........if you ride for at least a half hour every week, there is NO need to constantly have the battery on charge.
In fact, it is a bad idea because doing that will almost guarantee that when it does fail you will be far from home.......as you found out the hard way.
