    Default Smoke signals

Well a month ago or so I placed a forum asking about the spyder smoking.. Had awesome replies and took it to the local dealer. Since they were going to change the oil and remove the plastic I would have them check it out. Well they did change the oil so they stated and return the unit stating no reason for it to smoke.. Drove it home in the rain that evening and parked her in the garage no smoke. Well drove it a couple miles to a nearby wing joint and POOF ! Huge bellow of smoke.. WTH! So I let her sit and no over heating, nothing.. smoked stopped so I drove it home pulled into the garage and POOF white smoke fills the garage. WTH ! Talked to a couple peeps on fb page and they suggested I remove all the plastic and take a peek. Well heck I did, and Im a nurse.. I can save your ass but mechanic um not really. So I removed the plastic look in there and I was like ya an engine.. LOL didnt see discoloration, fluids, melting wires. Nothing strange looking as I would see. I drive it around the neighborhood naked.. The bike not me.. LOL and drive up the driveway POOF smoke coming from the belt side.. I peek into the small spot under the belt and found this..

Well showed this to the FB friends and one of them take that to the dealer. So I did.. They state "Well we can not diagnosis everything" Really miss a huge piece of plastic jammed between the belt and exhaust? Hummm..

    Default Wow...!!W

If the shop did the oil change they should have smelled the burnt plastic and a good tech will inspect the unit visually to see if all is well. I have to wonder about them or if it was just that tech. Did they do any other work at the time that could have caused this to happen like belt adjustment etc....

There is a specific procedure for checking the oil. See your manual. One of the things is that the engine should be up to operating temperature.

    "Reservoir" ??? Oil ????

Knowing what model and year you have would be helpful.
You can put that information into your "signature" since there isn't another displayed field for it.

Does anyone recognize the PART in the pictures? IS this at or near the drive belt? Is this a Factory spare Part?

Lurker here, My ride is a GW, Road Smith Conversion, and I can tell you, anyone that depends on a dealer without checking the work, beware. Oil changes, and some other things are difficult to check, but depending on most dealers is a no, no, Honda included. A really sad testimonial, when you pay $75/80 per hour for a fix or maintenance, but it is what it is.

Most shops just hire kids off the street to do your work under the supervision of a real tech. Sometimes the real tech is having coffee and donuts and too busy to supervise so the kid does the best he can which is not good enough. This is the practice used by the largest chain of Can Am dealerships in the US. Bet you can guess who they are. As of this date 46 dealerships. We know the owners.

My dealer even had kids setting up the new spyders. Mine the kid checked the oil before it was ever started, no oil showing so added over a quart of oil. After I test drove it I asked the salesman to show me the way to check the oil. The oil was nearly running out the top of reservoir. There were more horrer stories from set up to first service they did
and have never took it back since, do all my own serviceing etc now.

I just took a look and I have this same part on my 2016 ST-S...with 2 mounting bolts

My question...is there a reason to replace this with some other belt guard at this point?
Or is something like the Sypderpops (or similar) belt guard an "in addition" item that is worth adding?
