    Default Radio Antenna

Has anyone switched their long antenna on the RT to the short Scosche antenna from Wal-Mart.? I have purchased one but have not installed it. I was wander if you get as good of reception on the radio with the short as with the long antenna.

Yup, I've switched to that stubby rubber antenna from Wally World for both of our RT's. Reception is just as good, possibly better.

Thanks for the reply. I just purchased one today and did wander if the reception would be as good. I have a full cover that I do use once in while and it is hard to get it over the long antenna.

In case you haven't read " how to remove the antennae " ..... use a deep 7mm socket and a pair of vice grips to hold from slipping ........ remove all the thread sealer ( lok-tite ) from the antennae threads and as much as you can from internal threads ..... this will improve the contact between those metal parts, which is a very good thing ......good luck .... Works great. After being stubborn about changing over all these years and breaking a few putting on my cover I did it. Can not believe I did not do this earlier.

Is this the antenna you speak of? I don't use the radio much and don't really care about reception but if it works ok I'm in!

too. Another vote on the pile. Used one when my original one fell off. Did not notice any difference in reception. But, the reception is kind of bad for radio in AK anyway. To many mountain ranges all over the place.

I replaced mine as well with the one from Walmart. I like it for the looks and better reception.

I replaced my long antenna 2 years ago, I now have a short antenna. Here is picture of mine: New Radio Antenna on 2014RTS-SE6 001.jpg I used a 7mm deep socket. I installed the antenna myself.

See BLUEKNIGHT911 (Mike's) earlier post. After removing the boot, find a deep well 7 MM socket, slide it over the end of the antenna and use a pair of Vise-Grip like locking pliers to grasp the outside of the socket and turn CC. They (BRP) put a lot of locktite on the threads and the originals are usually a bear to break free and remove. But you can.

What make and model is your antenna? I have one of WM’s short flexible antennas but the reception is not good. I think yours is a bit longer and would be more beneficial. Thanks

2016 RTL my rubber boot will not stay on so I bought a stubby one from Lamonster just can't figure out how to remove it mine flexes it's not rigid like 2015 and back. Mine is shorter than the one on a 2015 as well. I watched Lamonsters video as well

A couple of years ago when my OEM antenna broke off on the Interstate in Kansas somewhere, I stopped at a WM and bought the Scosche shorty. I was not impressed. No better than the OEM, if even as good. I eventually took my old BRP CB antenna I wasn't using and put it on the radio side.

Unless you have some overwhelming reason to get away from the OEM antenna, like Jack above, I say stick with it.

Hmmm your last statement has me thinking about putting a dab of dielectric grease on the threads

While that sounds like a good thing to do: that antenna needs to be solidly in place. The di-electric grease might just allow it to "loosen-up"; you'll have a fun time looking for it along the road...

I bought the short antenna @ Pitbulls, Item # 710005084, the boot item # is 708300156. In different parts of VT, the radio reception is ok( depending on the radio station).

Thanks for the response... I’ll look into it. Hopefully here in NY I’ll be ok with that one...see you at Spyderquest!
