the " key " to the problem
just putting this out here , I had the flash and the gear error while driving , the flashers were blinking , all sort of things , { one of our rider members here } mentioned that pulling the key out , and walk away from your cycle for about 5 minutes , resets the puter on board .... give it a try ! { you ride a 2011 or 2012 model ? }

Not sure if you are new to the rs but some thoughts
- pull the code - might give a clue (key on, hold down mode, set, and push turn button in)
- very sensitive to low oil - gearbox carries on a treat if oil is low
- E often indicates Gear Position Sensor issue - maybe...
- it's happening when stuck in traffic - coolant? Fan working ok?
Other than that, low or old battery, or even just a slightly loose battery connection, could be the culprit.
Now you have had all my ideas - more ideas will follow from others
Please let us know what you figure out...

You do not tell us what year your RS is. It may make a difference.
To retrieve the active fault codes on most RS models.
With the engine running and the fault active with the fault light on.
Press the mode button repeatedly until displaying total engine hours and hold mode button.
Flash the high beams 5X in less than 2 seconds.
Release the buttons.
Either the faults codes will appear or a message that there are no faults present.
By your description it may be a Gear position sensor problem but a fault code will confirm that.

The magical key walk is a long running myth. Turning the key off for 30 seconds may change a faults state from active to occured. It does not fix anything.

Lets see....
Generally when the gear indicator changes to E or R or both or does things it is the gear positioning sensor that is the culprit. Now this does not mean it is bad cause poor shifting will cause this as well. Regardless if you do pull the key and allow enough time for all the systems to reset ( 30 to 45 min depending on model) this will go away if not a bad sensor. If it come on or comes back quickly then you need to check the sensor....
