    Default Sadly....

Has happened in many of the venues... problem is many can not afford to maintain them and did not need them in the first place....

The venue West of Atlanta where the shooting sports took place in 1996 turned into a vehicle storage area. The corrupt people who run Atlanta don't like firearms.

    Hi Gene,

Re: many can not afford to maintain them

In the early 90's I made 6 business trips to Brazil during about a 2 1/2 yr period. The one thing that I noticed is that they simply do not maintain their infrastructure. They do not care to.

A word to the wise to those countries that are willing to pay the "ransom" that the IOC gets for approving where the upcoming games are to be held. We have done better than most.

The video ends by saying "Perhaps the protestors (before the Olympics) were right." --- Perhaps they were right? Anyone can see that they were.

This sort of thing happens with almost every Olympics. Nothing new here. ....And yet Los Angeles and Salt Lake City are finalists for upcoming Summer and Winter games.

Possible short-term gain with almost positive long-term loss. .... I don't get why any city still bids.

Maybe the protesters knew the Bolivian way of doing things???

Salt Lake City is my old stomping grounds and I visit family there regularly. The winter Olympics were held there a while ago and the infrastructure was greatly improved for the event. Wider highways, and better roads up to the ski resorts. Getting up to Snow Basin ski resort used to be a winding two lane road with tow trucks along the way. The Giant Slalom and other Olympic skiing events were held there. It was made a safer four lane road.

My family could tell more about all the improvements than me. What they are most proud of is, when the Olympics were over, they were under budget and made a wad of money.

Guess it depends on who's in charge of the whole shebang. Mitt Romney took the job over after SLC started going in the hole. Not trying to get political here. Just stating facts...

No, I don't visit family in the winter time up there. Too cold for my old Texan bones.

Yes, one of the success stories. The projects were done right, and with proper planning last well after the scheduled events.

I wonder how the hotels are that were built in Russia for their last go around?

And Romney took a lot of grief because the SLC area generally turned a profit! Most places that host the Olympics go into the red in a big way. They spend lots of money and displace a lot of folks (like in Atlanta) in order to build the venues. And the spending starts with what goes to the IOC for a favorable decision! All for a few weeks of publicity.
