Default Never knew this about reverse

The other day I was on a section of old highway US 95 that is about 2 miles long and dead ended. I wanted to back track about a thousand feet and since there was no traffic on the road I decided to just back up all the way. I put it into reverse and opened up the throttle. I noticed the motor was surging and not running smooth. I opened the throttle to wide open and looked down at the speedometer. It was holding steady at 9 mph. What I was experiencing was Nanny limiting reverse speed to 9 mph regardless of how wide open the throttle is. Another safety feature of hers. Anyone else ever notice this?

    Default Oh yeah....

The old rev limiter also used on Quads back in the day with the exception that you could eliminate them on the quads and back up full speed... rear steering is a whole different kinda of fun....

9 mph is about 8 mph faster than a Goldwing Trike will go in reverse!

    Default reverse

Yes I have done this also and it will only go to a certain mph in reverse though I never looked at what speed it is.

Yup! They limit how fast you can go in reverse...
And if you want to put your bike up on it's side (or worse... ): crank the steering over quickly at that 9 mph... you will NOT be happy!

I thought I remember reading something like that in the manual but I dont remember if it listed a specific speed. Will have to go check now. Regardless, you dont wanna go that fast anyways, things seem to happen quicker in reverse.

True, but I only back out of a parking spot so 1 mph is okay with me. 9 mph could be a little much in some circumstances.

I traded my 2014 RT for a 2017 Mr. White RT-S. I am George Lewis. I live two miles from Boerne, TX. I am 89, retired USAF and Sony Corp. I also have a GW MotorTrike. My email: scoot62@aol.com

Yes, but remember that a GW trike is a remanufacture of the original design. On a two-wheel GW anything over 1 MPH in reverse could lead to catastrophic consequences.

I owned two GW's in the past decade and fully appreciated the reverse feature. Once, caught in an iced over roadway it was possible for me to execute a 180 degree turn using reverse and my two legs as outriggers. I never would have been able to turn the bike around otherwise.

The Spyder is a completely different animal from either GW, bike or trike.

Well, I learned something new today. No more than 3 mph in my driveway. Probably less parking lot situations. I do like the reverse though. That 765# Vulcan is not fun to turn around in my pretty full garage.

That's why I just now learned about this safety feature. First time in 4 summers of Spyder ryding that I was in a situation with a long, wide, straight unused roadway behind me to make backing up fast safe! Two or 3 mph backing out a driveway onto a street is plenty fast enough for that situation.

Unless you've entered a "Reverse Racing League" in another dimension: this shouldn't be a problem!

In NJ, the speed limit across a sidewalk is 4MPH. And yes, I've written that.

    Default I have experienced...

...engine surging while in reverse. I wasn't trying to go fast... it was surging at slow... Not every time, though.
