Default Swerving, Nanny, & cruise control

There has been quite a bit of discussion here about the role the VSS, aka Nanny, plays in riding a Spyder, but I thought I'd add a comment for the benefit of the newer Spyder Lovers.

Last night I was going up Horseshoe Bend Hill on Idaho 55 in fifth gear and a steady 65 mph with Cruise Control on. I suddenly noticed an obstacle in the middle of the lane right in line with my right front tire. I did a real quick left, right, left swerve to go around it. Nanny turned CC off so suddenly it almost startled me and for a couple of seconds I wondered what had wrong with my Spyder. Then I realized CC was off. Quick throttle up, hit cruise button, and all was well. What I don't know is if Nanny turned cruise off after the first quick left turn or if it was the combination of the quick left, right, left that did it. Once again this shows just how quickly Nanny reacts when it needs to.

    Default As I see it...

The nanny would cancel the cruise on any sudden move. While on cruise slight changes would not affect her. But wonder, cause I have gotten the VSS warning on a long banked sweeping curve..guess the nanny was thinking I was going to eventually roll....but I have no cruise and ryde an RS

    Default CC CANCELED

This is NORMAL for the VSS to activate during this circumstance ..... it's designed to activate when certain perimeters have been exceeded ..... and you exceeded them ....... I have had the VSS light come on ( in the twisties ) but no slowing down because I wasn't beyond the seting necessary ......... Mike

Nanny doesn't want you going off in an "unintended direction" at cruising speed...
(What if the swerve was caused by a H U G E sneeze, and it wasn't by choice? )

Why would you not have the cruise on? The last long trip I took there was a strait road that seemed to go no forever but the speed limit was only 60, I set my cruise at 65 and just turned the music up and chilled. They must get a lot of speeders as I passed two cops that day. Anyways to me its about the cruising, If I wanted to haul balls I would get my hayabusa back out.

You missed the point. He was in 5th gear at 65mph, not 6th - and that is why the question was asked.

So he likes to wast fuel... that's his choice!
Personally: I'm in sixth gear at 39 mph on a flat stretch of road.

You need to learn how to sneeze without jerking the steering. Same as SCUBA. One of the biggest problems learning how to dive is sneezing or coughing underwater. Seriously!

I sometimes like to sight see while driving the slower roads. Usually deserted and 40 mph is just fine. I get the revs above 3500 and regardless of gear, sometimes put the cruise control on.

Because you are heading up Horseshoe Bend Hill and want a slightly lower gear? It's certainly what I do.

I use cruise as much as I can to maintain a desired speed, anywhere from the minimum that will set, about 28 mph, up to 85 on a 80 mph limit Interstate, in any gear from 2nd to 6th. In this case the hill was steep enough that the RT won't maintain 65 in 6th, hence my use of 5th. You can run a Spyder in 5th up to 80 for an extended time period, no problem!

But it's what we all do best: critique every choice by everyone in here, and offer our own solutions! (After all: they're the ONLY correct choice to make! )

OK, I thought that might be a possibility.

BUT I'm not sure I agree with using the "cruise control" for anything other than cruising.....long (mostly) straight road at constant speed.
Putzing around with it in short term situations like a steep hill just seems to me like a distraction that you don't really need.

To each his own, I guess.

And I can't believe some of the criticisms that people come up with.

    IT WAS AN HONEST QUESTION.

    He provided a good answer.

    Default BTW

I use cruise from as low as you can set it up to 85mph. Depends on traffic, road conditions and the like. And if it's Raining.

I have no problem saying I am a creeper as well. I usually set mine just a few miles above the speed limit and I'm content to just enjoy the ride, guess why I got the RT.
