    Default BUDS report

Do you ask for a copy of the BUDS report after getting service done on your Spyder?
Possible answers that I can think of are:

    A) Never thought of getting a copy.
    B) Never thought of getting a copy, but will ask for one next time.
    C) Dealer would not give a copy.
    D) No useful information on in the BUDS report.
    E) Dealer was unable to give report due to technical problems.

I had answer E because the dealer could not connect the laptop being used for the BUDS to a printer.
I asked for the report to be mailed to me, but did not get a paper copy but instead a attachment to an email
with the report in the format extension of .mpem. I cannot find any tool (software) to open the file so am
thinking only the BUDS software can.

Now that I think of it...I have never had a BUDS report from my dealer. This covers 5 spyders, 9 years, and over 130,000 miles of driving and servicing.

I did get a BUDS report when Squared Away was visiting in AK and did the alignments on both Spyders for us. Now that's service.

My guess on those that say they cannot furnish it...did they really do the BUDS analysis? Probably not. The license is another cost that they can cut.

Similar subject: Valve checks on 998's. They charged you the $800--did they really put a wrench to your bike?

    Default Yeah....!!!!

Most just want to pay and get out of there. I do my own work but know some of the techs so I have them run a check and I see the codes that are stored and know most of them and the performance. Now my spyder shows that the machine has not been seen by a tech in some 890 hours of use and the techs cannot clear that unless I have service done by them. But then me and the "Jag" are going to the end of the road so who's gonna know....

Pardon my jaded reaction, but this and other threads have me believing already that this whole "Can Am Spyder Certified Dealer Service" issue is a Racket designed to empty my wallet.....and I haven't even seen a service tech yet, only had the trike about 2 months and 2,000 miles.

I guess I'll find out more at the 3,000 mile service appointment....

I also have not ever gotten a BUDS report, but silly me,I never thought to ask for one. Squared Away gave me one when I had my Spyder aligned at Red Rocks last Sept, even went over it with me. Nice touch. Shame on dealer for not doing this.

This goes back to the other thread(s) about dealers and independent shops. You paid to have the BUDS looked at and a report will be given or they won’ get paid IMO. Our Spyders are expensive and so is the service so just because someone has a tool or more knowledge doesn’t mean you get away scott free with some BS Windows excuse.

My Ex was an instructor for Bob Bondurant and I loved sending her to get work done. She would act like a normal female getting a quote so her husband could look at it. Both her an I hated with a serious passion how “Mechanics” treated women and people who don’t know mechanical “Things”. Watching her go toe to toe with service writers and mechanics was pure joy. Sit down, have a sip of coffee and watch the fireworks. Fun stuff for sure. By the time she got done the work was usually ½ the price.

I am a gearhead through and through and before I injured myself I worked on 100% of my own stuff unless it needed programming. On the very rare occasion I had to take it in for lack of tools, knowledge or time I always knew what needed to be done in a certain order or a very very good idea what needed to be taken apart. For a valve check, Valve cover etc where you know a cover has to come off then I use the old paint assembly trick and use a sharpie to mark one or two bolts. If an alum piece then a silver or red sharpie. Black then silver. 99.9% of the techs do not know what the sharpie mark is for and just rattle off the bolts no big deal. 99.9% of the techs do not use cleaner before or after they are done with the work so you get a Sharpie point of reference and greasy hand marks. No denying if you did your job or not.

Last time any of my bikes have seen a service tech at the dealership was the day they were taken out of the crate with the exception of my Can Am ATV and more than likely (sometime in the future) our Spyder, but that is due only to BUDS.

If you do take your bike in for service, take a look in the owners manual at the required break in maintenance, then look at the price they are going to charge you. I'll just do it myself!

I hear you. When it comes to my 1951 Oldsmobile, I do it myself. On my 1995 Fatboy, I did it myself. On this beast....I think a certified/trained technician is the best route for me, at least for the initial 3,000 mile service. I want the BUDS scan done also. I'll see if I can buddy-up with the technician, ask a few questions, get a few pointers, and see how close he/she lets me get to watch the work.

I have lost count of the number of Spyders I have serviced that never had the initial check done in BUDS by the dealer at assembly. IE they had never been connected to BUDS since leaving the factory. Some of them had had several dealer service intervals done.

Several of our customers have asked for a copy of the BUDS report as a part of the scheduled service and we happily comply. Its about 35 color pages so we do not print it out unless asked.

Also be aware there is a difference (time and cost) between asking for an oil change vs asking for a full service including BUDS check.

Yes, I am asking Certified Dealers for the 3,000 mile service, including BUDS check. Best price so far out of 5 dealers is $400. Large dealership about 2 hrs away. I guess I'm going with that one. Thanks

I could care less what the BUDS even says. My Spyder is flawless in every respect so why bother looking at it. What will it tell me that would change anything I do? I'm not willing to alter my riding habits so who cares. Gonna go pop a BUD and watch the game now

Wow 35 pages and in COLOR!!! I am guessing that to print 1 page would cost around 10 to 15 cents at a shop that prints documents. That would mean that the cost to print out a BUDS report would be about $3.50 to $5.25. I realize that that would eat into a dealers profit margin but not very much. I agree that it would not make much sense to get a BUDS report for an oil change but if there is any adjustments made such as the DPS then BUDS should be done.

    ...
I have a followup question: Is it possible to put the report into a PDF file format? With some software such as microsoft office you can go to FILE then click on Export or Save As. If this is possible with the buds software then the file could be emailed to the customer and then he/she would have a digital record. After all we are getting into the digital age (so my kids tell me).

    B for me.

At the NorCal rally, I watched as Joe from Squared Away provided a laser-alignment customer a walk-thru of the BUDS report on his computer; it provides some useful information. Maybe Squared-Away could provide that as a standalone service to rally attendees who want it. The equipment and software is expensive, plus there is an annual licensing fee to be paid and I'm impressed that Joe and Ann have made that investment. They also seem to know what the readouts mean in layman's terms, so that's worthwhile in itself.
