Metal ish burning smell on almost any new bike is the preservative on the exhaust burning off. I had it too when new. I still get fumes of gas from the evap can now and then as well.

All the new motorcycles I have had smelled like something was burning.
I think it is mostly natural given the tempurature the thing runs at.
It should get less after a you put some miles on it.

FISH65 here. QUACKERZ'S wrench I mean husband.
It's more like an oil smell. Could be plastic as some have said.
I will pull the right side this weekend and look for lose wire and such to.

I've got over 2000 miles on my spyder and I'd say I started to smell this within the last 300 to 400 miles. I know thats not a lot of miles but I would have figured anything that needed to burn off would have by now. We are going to open her up this weekend to see what we can see, but I still appreciate any suggestions on what this might be from riders who have had their spyder longer and what else we might look for. Again thanks for your help,

Check your brake reservoir caps are tight and not leaking,it could possibly be oil from the breather box exiting the drain hole and burning. Many have found oil in the airbox and it eventually will make its way to a small drain hole on the right hand side below the snorkel tubes, takes about the amount miles you have, it was on mine.

If it's a oil smell it most likely oil coming from the air box on the front right.

Nope no saltines near the . I had the smell again going to work this morning, so I guess I'll have my wrench start looking for the problem tonight. Thanks for all the responses, they are much appreciated.

People actually pay for those "new" smells. I understand there is a car air freshner that simulates that smell. LOL

Last night while driving home, right before I got on the freeway there was this burning smell and puff of smoke. With my better half watching from behind we took the side streets home. He pulled the panels and sure enough there was oil around and in the air box. I've looked at Lamonsters pix with his mode for this and I need . Could any of you helpful spyderlovers out there reply with a parts list and how that mod is mounted. Boy do I feel like a newbie. I appreciate your help. Thanks,

FYI, just having oil in the airbox won't cause smoke. I just opened both mine and dltang's airbox today to check and clean the air filters and we both had oil in there, puddled in spots. We don't have the burning smell issue that you are having. If that oil is the cause of your problem, the oil must be dripping down onto something hot like the exhaust pipe and burning off. That would give both the smell and the white smoke.
Just want to be sure you've determined that the oil is definitely the problem and you know for sure where its coming from before you go and buy some things that won't cure your problem.

We pulled the tuberware on both sides last night.
There was oil in under and aroud the air box. Some and dripped down onto the top of the raditor.
No other fluids are leaking and no wires tocuhing anything hot.
I cleand up the air box and any oil around it that i could see.
If we do the mod with the air/oil separator will with keep oil out of the air box?
