Default Kids on the Can Am??

I'm curious, what's the recommended age for a child to ride as a passenger on the can am?

Depends on the state. Regardless of what state, a child must wear a helmet. What constitutes a child depends on which state you are riding in.

Everybody has to find their own "comfort level" with this question:
The Child should be able to get their feet firmly on the pegs (or floorboards), and have sufficient upper body strength, to be able to hang on.
    After that: it's a parent's (or grandparent's) discretion.

Default Kids on a Can Am

Last year my son rode my wife's RTL with my 12 year old granddaughter as a passenger and my wife rode with me all the way down 101 from Newport Oregon to Malibu, on a 5 day ride. Some days we were riding for 8 hours with breaks and my granddaughter had a blast.
My son got on Craigs list and bought her all protective the gear she needed, plus a new helmet that fit perfect. we all had U-Clear coms so we could all talk to each other.

with Bob, with one addition, the child should also wear the same protective gear as an adult. Dale

With the proper gear and the right child it can be a great experience that everyone involved will remember for the rest of their life. But in my opinion. The 1st to requirements are extremely important.

Our daughter has been riding our RT's since she was 9... ATGATT of course. She likes my wife's better as she has the Diamond R armrests. We have done several across state trips with her. She is almost 13 now.

This is the best kid belt on the market....I got a really good one and they work great. In fact I have one I need to sell...

These units are really well made, have padding in the right areas, etc...

I agree Bob. My grandkids both hat to be able to put their feet flat on the passinger pegs before they could ride up with Papa John. That meant a two year wait for my granddaughter. She didn't seem too excited about it but my grandson loves riding with me. They both have their leather vests with my Club logo on the back.

I finally agree with Bob D. However, if your child needs a belt strapped to you because they cannot reach the foot pegs, or unable to hang onto to the grab bars, IMO they shouldn't be a passenger. I see ages 9-13 listed here; not all 9-13 years old are the same size, or have the same strength, or endurance; so, I'm not sure how much age is a factor to base your choice on that.

Here is my quandary... You have your 12 year old kid on the can am and god forbid you get into an accident. Will you be plastered all over the news for being a bad parent by putting your child in a dangerous situation? How would you be judged in the societal court of opinion?

My daughter has gone on the back of my Spyder since she was 10 (she's now 14). Made sure she had proper gear from day one and that it fitted as well a possible so wouldn't move/falloff in an accident. Obviously has she has grown I've had to keep updating it to new sizes but better that than something being too loose/tight.

Fitted backrest but otherwise no mod's.

Did get an intercom so we can talk while riding.

I was 6 or 7 when I first started going on the back of my dads bike (a Yellow Matchless), I'm guessing when my feet would reach the footpegs. Before that I got transported around in the sidecar on a Panther 600:-)

I'm with Bob on this. That and a proper fitting helmet! Tom
