Default My $35 version of "magic mirrors"

After I had been taking my mirrors on and off several times over the years for various MODS on my 2010 RT.

    Pic 1.jpg
My clips broke here on the retainer portion of the top Clip. See the piece from the broken clip?

    One day as I was passing by my RT, I bumped into my mirror and the darn thing nearly fell off. I was furious at first, but then I remembered reading about using magnets to hold the mirrors on (magic mirrors). I thought I might give it a try. So here is what I came up with;
    The parts I used were:
6 each -Magnets from “eBay” - Round Countersunk Ring Magnets 25 x 10mm Hole 6mm Rare Earth Neodymium
    6 each Steel Washers
    12 each Countersunk wood screws
1 ¼ inch long metric screws

First of all instead of the washers being cut down to fit inside the clip socket, I made it so the washers would fit over the clip while it is still in the socket while using the same screw holes but longer screws. You will have to remove the clip so you can pick up the holes. See pictures below.
    pic 2.jpgpic 3.jpg
Once the holes are picked up they should be counter sunk (the screws must not protrude above the surface of the washer).

Now proceed to do the rest of the washers. Here’s how mine looked when I finished.
    pic 4.jpg
Now let’s prepare the clips, first I had to modify the good top clip to match the broken one.
    pic 5.jpg

To be continued on my next post. See you next time

Default My version of "magic mirrors"

Next trim the tab on the bottom two clips and then use afile so that the washer will sit flush and remove the metal retaining clips.
    pic 7.jpg

Now let’s install the plastic clip and the metal washer, note the slight “apparent” misalignment (it is necessary) for the center holeis the focal point not the outside perimeter.
    pic 9.jpg
Next let’s preparethe bike side, first the magnet, screw and washer assembly is shown below:

More on the next post only because I don't know how to do it all at once. Sooooo see you next time!

Default My Version of "Magic mirrors" part three

Remove the existing stud pin screws and replace them withthe magnet screw and washer assembly see picture:
    pic 13.jpg
By loosening the screw that holding the Tupper ware as shownbelow, this will allow for the Tupper ware slight movement to accommodate thespacer washer for the magnet:
    pic 14.jpg

After all the magnet assemblies are installed reattach themirror assemblies.
    pic 15.jpg

Aline the screw heads in the hole of the washers with aslight push and BAM! You have your very own set of “SNAPP MIRRORS”
I hope this helps someone outthere save some money and time !

    Thanks for your time!

Whichever way you look at it or whatever order you might get it in, it looks like you've made a pretty good start on your own version of these Willie, Good Stuff! Well Done!

Thanks for giving the part numbers, but i am a bit confused on there only being 6 washers....
You put the washers on the mirror side, and in the post i quoted, you are saying put the washers under the magnets. I was hoping to do this this weekend, so any clarification would be much appreciated.

I have had them on for a year. They work great. The only thing I suggest is keeping the top clip on the mirror. This hook is only used to "hang" the mirror off, and doesn't take any force putting the mirror on and off.
Last year when I first used this system, I was on a long trip, and hit a pot hole, and the mirror came off. Now, I had a tether, so it just dropped, but it actually did it a couple times on the trip. I put the top clip back on the mirror, and have not had another issue.

Sorry to hear that, but I knew if they were cracked, they'd most likely break

Years ago I made my own " Mirror Magnets " ….. I shaped the metal re-placements for the OEM plastic pieces to fit as OEM …. after researching for months I decided to use N50 rare earth magnets that were epoxied into a metal cup. That cup did two things, #1. it increased the strength of the magnet ( so I could use a thinner one ) and #2.-it made the magnet almost indestructible … I had learned that when a magnet breaks in half or more pieces - it will actually increase in strength ( only if it is contained so it doesn't shatter into many un-usable pieces ) … according to science when a magnet breaks all the pieces will have the same N / S orientation as prior to ….. I actually tested this by shattering one with a hammer, since it was epoxied in all the pieces remained where they were originally..... I didn't have a measuring device, but I did a Slide test with an unbroken magnet ….. it felt like the broken needed more effort to move it while attached to a 1/4in. thick steel bar..... I then contracted with a Magnet supplier to have those magnet assemblies constructed to my specs..... so the OEM bolt hole could be used ….. Mike

I can tell you I've had them for a couple years now, and work like a charm. Thanks again for all the info you provided.
