If you believe the conspiracy theorists, they actually are Chemtrails. The government (and not just ours) puts chemicals in the fuel to seed the atmosphere and control the weather. Anyway, that's what the nutjobs say. But then, nutjobs these days say a lot of things.

Nope, just water vapor (which can turn into ice crystals depending upon outside air temp). If you lived in the desert you would see the sky constantly criss-crossed with con-trails when it is clear and dry. They last a surprisingly long time.
Oh, and we have no significant weather here in the desert either save a monsoon or two in mid-summer. If someone is seeding the weather it ain't working.

I am so glad the video added the note about registering flights and that the balloons carry radar reflectors, or that video could have had a much different ending.

If you look, the trails are not disappearing like a contrail disappears behind a jet. Just spreads and mucks up the sky.

The video isn't long enough to show anything like that.
Most of the time, the condensation FREEZES and the ice crystals take a fairly long time to completely return to water.
During that time, they gradually disperse.
It depends on altitude and the current conditions but the trail NEVER disappears immediately behind the plane.......unless they are flying VERY low.

Got to disagree with that theory.
Out here in the very dry desert it is very common to see high flying commercial aircraft leave contrails behind as they transit the Valley. The contrail usually lasts but a few seconds when visible from ground level. Even with binoculars you cannot see the contrails after 30 seconds or so.
It is interesting to note that during WWII over Europe the four-engine bombers such as the B-17 left much longer contrails than do modern jets. I am guessing that the exit gasses from the B-17's was much hotter due to the lack of bypass air that modern jets use to make less noise.

It depends, of course, on the atmospheric conditions present at the time.......and at the altitude where the plane IS.
The temperature and humidity at ground level often has NO bearing on what it is at 35,000 feet.
Maybe the "short tails" that you are seeing are from planes that aren't as high up as you think.

The normal altitude for civilian aircraft transiting the Valley is between 38-40,000 feet. Valley average elevation is approximately 1,300 feet. It is usually very dry at ground level and even drier as altitude increases. Contrails are much more observable from ground level during winter.
