    Default Break-in

First I have to say it has been five years since I have bought a new Spyder, even then it was a RT, a different motor, and less brain cells.

I'm a bit confused about the break-in for the 1330 F3T. I know not to keep the RPM's at a consistent level for too long, so I increase/decrease every five minutes or so. On page 49 of the manual it says the break-in period is 600 miles, no hard braking for first 200 miles, avoid full throttle acceleration, and so on.

What is confusing me is it also states after the break-in period to have the vehicle inspected as per the maintenance schedule. When I looked it up on page 109 it says 3,000 miles, and on page 111 for the "first inspection" it too says 3,000 miles.

Since the first service (oil change, etc) is at 3,000 miles. Is the first inspection at 600 miles the same, but just without the oil change?

    Thank you for any help.
Is it Friday yet? ... Oh yeah, I forgot. I'm retired

i am old school, i always changed the oil at 600 miles, then every 3000 after that. as far as break in time, that only lasted till i ran into friends. then i started riding my bikes like i stole them. so it is up to how you feel. good luck and ride safe

The Break-In period is 3,000 miles. That's when the first service should be performed.
Most folks (myself included...) take it a bit easy on the engine for that 600 mile period.
    (Including varying the rpm levels...)
After that: I just rode it like normal.

    Lightbulb Break in plan

I break them in a little different. Take a trip to Quartszite. The freeway traffic isn't heavy. Run it up to 70 or 80 and back off of it down to 45 or 50. Repeat as often as possible. You will accomplish two things here. You'll get the first needed mileage on her and proper break in will be done.

I'm not sticking up for BRP and I do think their manual writing/proofing/editing leaves something to be desired (maybe it's the lingo), but I think they just consider the break in period for a new Spyder to be 600 miles. Looking back at the 2013 RT and forward to the 2016 RS operator's manuals it says the same thing, break in period 600 miles and then directs the reader to the maintenance section which for those vehicles the first maintenance happens to be at 600 miles as I understand it is for all the V-twins.

Take it a bit easy the first 600 miles. Tires and brakes need about 300 miles to get set in. Highway speeds no problem just don't drive it like you stole it. You can if you want. It's your money, its your

The first oil change service is recommended at 3000 miles. I did that with mine and no issues. The 9,500 mile or once a year oil change service also is right on. They don't use a drop of oil. I had my first "once a year" Monday. Normally, I exceed the recommend miles, which I hope to do again this year.

I pretty much have with all of my Spyders, not crazy, but like to teach them from a young age

My ST was probably given the worst start in its early days, picked it up on a Thursday and by Sunday it had done 90kms,
By Sunday Night it had done 180 but spent most of the day taking Cancer Kids for rides around the Pukekohe Race Track.
The kids had a ball and just wanted to go faster, and the parents just said "do it" as a lot of the kids would not be back the
    following year.
The Motor and Brakes had a serious work out, and the ST never missed a beat for the next 27,000kms

It was an awesome ride and it took a bit of convincing to get rid of it to get an F3, but was definitely the right move.

That's how I broke in my 14RTS SM6 and I've got over 100,000 nearly trouble free miles on it. I rode from Las Vegas to Long Beach CA before noon on the first day I had it.

When I got my 2014 RT, I took delivery on a thursday and did a 100 mile ride through the country. Then 2 days later we did a 500 mile day trip to the NC mountains where I drove it like I stole it. The next day, I did another 200 mile trip. That was a total of 800 miles in 4 days. Now I have 21k miles and it is still great.

Similar to our story with the 2011 RT. Bought it new in 2012 on a Friday. I put on the first 50 miles to check it out. Linda then rode it over 750 miles the first weekend. We were past break-in service (600 miles) sometime on Sunday. Had to wait a week before we took it in for the service. It had 1500 miles on it. Not bad for a week of "leisurely" driving by a little ol lady. We now have 24K and change on it. Serviced and ready to go for another season.

If you drive your ride like a little old lady to break it in, then you'll end up with a little old lady's ride. If you run your ride like you stole it to break it in, you'll have a great ride. Actually the rings should have seated during the test run up at the factory. But knowing BRP, I wouldn't bet much money that they even do a factory test run. I do hope I'm wrong on that one.

In this case, the "little ol lady" was following me on my well broken in 2010 RTS. No special treatment here.
