Full face helmet
Guy (whom I do not know personally) on a motorcycle passed an 18 wheeler when it had a blowout and a chunk hit him in the face. He stayed upright and lived to share this picture. I wear a modular and never ride with the face up. I don't know people in the states with no helmet laws risk it.

This is exactly why I switched to a modular. A guy here at work had to have his face reconstructed years back because he was wearing an open face helmet. Notice the arm is wrapped up in gauze.

This picture is should be part of a Public Service Announcement as to why EVERY rider should wear a helmet.

That is why I wear a modular helmet. Down when ryding, up when sitting at a stop light when it is hot.

This is also why I try to stay away from the big rigs when ever possible.

That of course is not a modular helmet, so there is the possibility that you could be pulling bits of that movable chin bar out of your mouth after an encounter like that! Love the convenience of the modular but prefer the safety of the Snell Approved Arai Full Face helmet!

A full-face helmet might be a good first choice...
But almost ANY chin-piece will put up a pretty good fight for you!

this is why i really crank the throttle when passing big rigs, I just want to pass as fast as possible.

Another reason that goes way back in my riding philosophy: Do not ride beside an 18 wheeler
Do not ride close behind an 18 wheeler
Do not pass an 18 wheeler slowly-pass as
quickly as possible!
I have twice been hit with pieces of tires from truck blowouts in my cagers and knew a guy who lost a leg on a motorcycle from a truck blowout. He was riding close behind a large truck when this happened.
Most truck tires are retreads and only rated for 65 MPH. Now how many trucks only go 65 MPH? Just take a look along any highway and look at all the truck tread that has separated and pieces of rubber that has departed from blowouts.

You don't think something can happen sitting at a stop light?

Wow...!!
He was very lucky.. road gators are a menace as well so stay clear of those multi wheeled trucks. They also tend to pick up rocks between the tires and latter launch them at speed..

I also follow the rule of thumb of never follow too close behind a big rig, pass them quickly when passing and generally give them as wide a berth as possible.
We have been hit in one of our cars while passing a truck when it blew a tire.
Back in the 70's I was following a semi in my car, probably a little closer than I should have but nothing stupid. It drove over a partial sheet of plywood and it sucked the plywood up in the air and I had no where to go. The plywood hit just under my front bumper, took out the air dam and wedged between the oil pan and the motor. I was lucky and learned a valuable lesson about being too close behind a semi. If that had been me on a bike the outcome might have been pretty ugly.
Really glad the rider was not more seriously injured.
We wear modular and I have great confidence my Shoei and my wife's Schuberth would protect us in the same way based on the quality of their construction.

I am glad the rider survived the exploding tire! I wear a modular and I will open the face shield at a traffic signal if I am stopped, I do not unlatch the chin bar unless I am
taking the helmet off, or putting it on.
Y'all ride safe out there!!!!!!

When I started riding years back, I decided to ware a full face helmet because I figure, if you go down the first thing that's going to hit is your chin.

WOW!! Really no explanation is needed. The picture explains why a full face shield (modular or for full helmet) is necessary- Thanks for the reminder

I've been using full face helmets since they first became available to me in 1976. In 1980 a Simpson helmet literally saved my life. These days my wife and I only wear Snell rated helmets (Shoei's). I want the best I can afford on my head.
