    I hate to ask this...

Are you SURE that the new battery was charged, and ready to be installed?
(They should be put on a trickle-charger overnight, before being pressed into service...)

Put a charger on for a few hours and then try again.

    Default Where to start....

Step one..... hook up a jumper to the system and if all is well look at the battery and or connections. Less likely but worth a check are all the fuses and relays, kill switch and any area recently worked on. From what you indicate I would suspect faulty connections or a battery with only a surface charge....
