Sturgis?
I see lots of people talking about events all over the US and Canada, but none that are within my budget and or time restrictions. The Deadwood event would work, but it is so close to Sturgis. I can't do both. Even though Sturgis is not a Spyder event, my wife and I already have plans to go. I am looking to see who may be also planning a Sturgis trip this year? We stay at the Shade Valley Campground and love it there. I would love to hear from others that are going. We have always gone alone.
I would also like to know if there is anything near North Dakota to be aware of? Other riders and or events?

At least I hope to be. We go every year but I am only 150 miles away. Hope to hit Deadwood again this year, we went last year for a couple days. The Black Hills are a great place to ride. We are down in the Sandhills of Nebraska and it is wide open country. There is more Spyders every year and really ready for the weather to get nice so we can ride in the hills.

Both are good. Deadwood is nice if you like guided/group rides. Sturgis is well... Sturgis... BRP did an owners ride last year during Sturgis... my wife and I were the only ones outside of the BRP staff. We had a nice ride with them. We are local though being only 15ish miles away.

That's a trip I hope to make some year.
Coming from SW Wisconsin that will take some planning and saving up some green stamps for that one. Someday.
Hope Y'all have fun out there.

Sturgis...is...Sturgis. A great blow out for the Harley crowd. You will be outnumbered greatly. The welcoming will vary depending on who you meet and what you do. It is not for everybody.
A great party if you like gazillions of people. If you don't mind waiting in line for restaurants, gas, etc. Accommodations also will be through the roof. You can get a very nice hotel suite in Vegas for what is being charged for "rustic."
I love the area. But like to drive the roads and see the sights a little less congested.

It is all in the who.
I guess it all depends on who is doing the spending. My wife and I camp at a very nice place for $330 for the full rally and that includes unlimited DaBus rides. You can eat and drink at a reasonable cost if you look. It is only a 4.5hr trip for me to get to Sturgis, transportation cost is low. It would take me 16.5hr to get to Spyderfest. Cost for me would be higher if not just due to the added lost work days.
P.S. "Budget" dose not always mean "Cheap". Sturgis is something we plan and have planed for the last 4 years, so we "budget" for it.

My Wife & I are doing a 3 week roadtrip down to the States this year.
Heading down the Pacific Coast Highway then over to Sturgis via the Grand Canyon.
Only doing Sturgis for 2 days, staying in Deadwood at the First Gold Hotel & Casino which is apparently the SpyderLovers headquarters during the rally.
As for cost, if I worried about how much things cost everytime I traveled I wouldn't leave my back yard!

I was your tail rider for that BRP ride. Shame the weather was playing games. Was a nice ride though with everyone having mostly fled the canyon due to the possible weather. Shame I won't get to do that one again.

Sturgis
We were there about a month ago during our trip to the Black Hills. It's a nice little town with a GREAT motorcycle museum. BUT----- I can't quite imagine being there with half a million ( 500,000) of my closest friends. . We have " Street Vibrations" here in Reno---- a few days when I stay out of the center of town.
Motorcycle groups of over 80,000 can cause---------------------- Kaos

Much, Much cheaper if you camp at "Buffalo Chip" Mike. Clothes are optional, good Whiskey is not!
In your case I would recommend clothes.

I was in Sturgis for the 75th party. I stayed at a campground and it cost me $50.00 per night including electricity and breakfast. Got lunch at the street vendors (yes that was outrageous, but not unexpected). Loved being with all the people and bikes. Spent one whole day sitting on a bench watching the people and bikes go by, a fantastic experience. Spearfish,Iron Mountain,Devils Tower, stayed away from Rushmore. Went to Wall Drug,Badlands National Park. Wall is a tourist trap but it was fun and besides I was a tourist. Picked up some poor lost newby at a gas station who didn't know what he was doing and his buddies had left him,so had him tag along with me for awhile. I think I tired him out tho as he disappeared after Badlands.
You can have a lot of fun at Sturgis and it is fun to watch the madness, just don't get carried away yourself and you'll be OK. If you are careful you don't have to spend a lot of money. I will go again tho I am also getting some other rides out of the way that I have always wanted to do so it may be awhile. I will say,I went in the 90's and it was a lot wilder then.I don't know if a stronger LEO presence as calmed things down or old age. Lot of gray hair and wrinkles.

Are you staying in Whitewood, or camping at the Whitewood campground? If it is the campground, I can't find much on them anymore. I see they went bankrupt and their web site is no longer in use? If that was your plan and they are not there anymore, I recommend http://www.shadevalley.com/ It is a very nice place. We will be going that way on the 4th as well.

I'm actually going up with a group that rented out a house just South of town. I'll be camping in the back yard but still have access to the house. Plans are to RIDE ALL DAY and party all night. I cant' wait, it's my first time at Sturgis. Fri 8-4 we are ridding about 490 miles to Valentine NE for a stop over then Sat 8-5 finish out the 240 miles to Whitewood SD.
