Car tire
So I took the Spyder (newly acquired 2010 RTS) into the shop for the first time. The mechanic says "oh oh, you have a car tire on the rear". He then says that that thing will explode, send me over the handle bars and tear through my bike and total it!
What say you? Is he on point with that comment?

Any tire can explode. He is feeding you a line of sh-t so he can sell and install a POS Kenda OEM tire.

There are a serious number of riders running car tyres on their Spyders for many years with absolutely no issues and better performance, Spider-Man. In fact, there are plenty of two wheel motorcycles running car tyres without any recorded instances of them failing.
Making a statement like that is simply laughable. I can understand him following the company line of "only use Kendas", due to the BRP/Kenda sales relationship, but to make up a scare tactic really makes you wonder about his competency in other areas. I'm with Highwayman in saying that you would do well to go elsewhere, if that is an option.

I used car tires on all there spyder we have owned, our current spyder has over 37000 miles. The OEM tire would only go about 8000 miles, the YOKOHAMA has 29000 and can go another 10000. The dealers feel the need to stay with BRP for liability. The rear tire coming apart can happen but so can the one on your car, it could have been a road hazard.

We have 30k on a car tire on the rear of our '14RT and have had no problems. The garbage Kendra that came on it wore out in 6k miles.
Just for laughs, go back to this guy and ask him to prove it in writing. I will bet you he will stutter and alude that he "heard" that from a "vague" expert on Spyders and their tires. Let us know what he says!
And don't just take our word for it, check out all these threads:

The car tire saga does go on. There are still dealers that will only install the OEM tires. I am stuck with such a dealer. The only one in Alaska now selling . I am not mechanical enough to bypass them and do it myself. Fronts--no problem, but getting into all that stuff on the rear--not for me.
Have never heard a failure of a car tire on a . The does not lean like a regular m/c--so what's the problem?
Lots of suggestions from the members as to "best" ones to use.
If you can find a place that will do them for you and not screw up your , I would say go for it.

Your 'mechanic' know not of what he speaks. Makes you wonder what else about your bike he knows less about than you do. I would seriously consider finding a better grade of 'mechanic'

Come back line...
Ask him about the effects of dynamic wheel balancers vs. lead sticky weights that will fly off and cause a "severe situation" and why are they allowed but a 4 ply tire with lots more load weight is so terrible...

Being new to the Spyder thing and now I hear if you put a car tire on them that the tire will explode !
Personalty I don't think I care to take the chance!
The Chance of what you ask?
A CAR TIRE will: Not fit on the rim, Cause you the crash and burn, will not handle, and your 1st and 3rd bore will look like GonZilla.
New to the Spyder not new to the Car tire. Coming from a Goldwing and running a car tire on it for close to 100,000 miles that's all I have heard for years
That Wench needs to find a new job, Go back and ask him how he knows that information.
Please let us know what he says! We all need a good laugh!

AMAZING
it amazes me just how uninformed some of the so-called experts are when it comes to things like this.....
don't worry pal, i installed my 1st KUMHO CAR TIRE on my RS back in 2009, and now have 100,000 miles of CAR TIRES on my SPYD3Rs..... NO problems whatsoever...
ride safely, and worry not about your car tire....

During my Harley days several Harley shops advised running synthetic oil would wreck my engine as the oil is too slippery and the bearings would not turn and wear flat. THEN, low and behold Harley came out with THERE synthetic oil and guess what, they now push synthetic oil. Hopefully BRP will
catch on and start using a car tire or at least a better tire. I been using car on spyder for years,no problems.

Mechanics
Mechanics are less than a dime a dozen. A BRP certified spyder tech on the other hand, is worth his weight. Too many mechanics never graduate beyond "righty tighty lefty loosey." However, they are still plentiful in and around M/C service departments all throughout the country, including BRP dealers. Most if not all BRP dealer service departments display their service techs' credentials in plain view of the of the public somewhere in the service office. A statement made by a machanic like, "a car tire will explode on a spyder," will likely never end up with his name on a valid certificate, of any type .
