    Default Cigarette plug amperage

Anyone know what the amperage rating of the cigarette plug in the trunk is? I want to plug a small air compressor in and not sure if I will have to go directly to the battery with alligator clips.

On my 2012 RT I plug my maintainer into that plug when Not in use and have Used my Slime small compressor in the same plug to top off the 3 tires to the proper Pounds. I also Pump up my airbag with it BUT only for 2-4 Seconds to inflate the Manual Air Bag to about 12-15 pounds for a Single 200 Pound rider. I always keep my V-Twin on the maintainer because it does drain a certain amount of juice for the computer when sitting.

It will run a small fine. There is a 6 amp fuse on that ckt and I have never blown it yet. Used an Harbor Freight 5.99 compressor with no problems. I think any small for motorcycle type will be just fine.

Doesn't that socket disconnect when the ignition is switched off? If so, it wouldn't be very useful for a battery maintainer.

    Just 5 amps...
But there ARE small compressors out there, that operate on less than that!

FRUNK when I tried to run the little Stop n Go compressor in my tire plug kit from that source. After checking to see why my battery maintainer wasn't working this fall, I found the blown 3 Amp fuse and replaced it with a 7.5 A fuse. I Also checked my maintainers and saw they ranged from 0.75 amp Battery Tender Junior to 1 A and a 2 Amp Schumacher maintainer. Likewise, little compressors vary, but most are around 5 Amp draw.

I have run the same compressor from the back lighter socket several times with no problems.

    Default Fuse Size

In 2014 and later the Accessory Fuse was changed to 5 Amp. On previous years it was 10 Amp, including Model Year 2013 (when they introduced the moveable fuse for switched or always on accessory plug).

Regardless of the fuse size the owners manuals always stated it was for no more than 3 Amps.

Not sure why the fuse was downgraded in 2014.

    Hi Bob,

No offense taken ! ( but you owe me one! ....)

I recalled because I was surprised when I saw that it was limited to 3 Amps. Now that you mention, it was indeed in my owner manual. My wife RS2012 has a 3A fuse listed and my ST2013 has a 10A listed. But both manual have the same paragraph than what you quoted above. To clear it out, one would have to check the wire gauge. B.T.W. you are never supposed to load a circuit at more than 80% of its fuse....

And checking the data on the compressor "after the fact" I see that it is rated at 6 AMP... hmmmm..

    Default another approach.

As we all know, we should have a battery tender. Great Dealers supply then installed at delivery. That said I changed the 7.5 amp fuse to 10 amp. Now the pigtail will supply a compressor or most anything else. Ya have to change the plug on your compressor..

Use the battery tender lead. 7.5 amps direct to the battery.

According to the wiring diagram for the 2014 RT the wire for the accessory circuit is 18 gauge. From what I find doing some Googling 18 ga in a 12 volt auto circuit will carry up to 10 amps up to 10 ft total length (power + ground return). I think one would be OK putting a 10 amp fuse into the box. Remember that would be 10 amps for for both plugs at the same time. If you put a 10 amp fuse in the box and run a compressor just make sure there is nothing plugged into the other outlet. You should be safe then.

I got around that concern with my trailer wiring. I have a 10 ga power lead direct from the battery to the trailer connector. This is to provide charging current for a deep cycle battery I carry in my 'tent on a trailer'. I made up a socket attached to a trailer wiring plug into which I can plug my air compressor, or any other heavy 12 volt load. I plug it into the trailer connector and have plenty power.

Attaching a plug in directly from battery works great for my batter maintainer, heated jacket or small air compressor on my 2014 Spyder RT Limited. I just have lead come out top of frunk lid to connect whichever i need to use. Since this runs directly to battery i get full power without fear of overheating other wiring. I use a 15 amp fuse inline to prevent any possible damage to Spyder.

I use a small sears air compressor in our trunk plug and it does fine. Never had any problem. Use it for tires and air mattresses and the air shock. But I leave the bike running if I'm going to use it for very long.
