Happy New Year all. My wife insists that she would prefer a top box to the fitted back rest. So, how the hell do I remove it? There are a couple of screws (galled) underneath but after removing them...nothing. It looks like the whole plate should shift forward but no movement there either. Any ideas?
If you raise the seat you will see a red knob just to the right of centre near the seat hinge. Pull the knob to release the backrest. They came with a cover plate to fit over the void when the backrest was not in use.
The best substitute for brains & knowledge is....................silence.
Whoa, you're the man. I had seen the knob but didn't know what it was for, assumed it was the auto destruct button. Thanks heaps and have a Happy New Year.

I have a back rest to sell...Silver, but can be painted, if necessary. New they are $659, selling for $300 or best offer. I use an aftermarket backrest. I'm in Las Vegas.
Sorry about the late reply (I have terminal leukemia, and spent a heap of time in the hospital) I manged to fit a top box on the plate that covers the cavity under the passenger back rest, looks quite professional. Incidentally I've replace front and rear shocks and it's made an amazing difference, only problem is I'm too sick to ride it. Bugger. Oh yes, I live (for the moment) in Rotorua.
